Re: SEMA 2018... 2019 Products
[QUOTE=WristyManchego;1603242]Not true with Duragloss and McKees.
They’d still pay a designer for the work, they just have a very “interesting” package design that probably has its roots in packaging from the early days of car care and their brand focus is on the product instead of the image. [Quote]
However one would like to classify it, both Duragloss and McKee’s have not continued the focus in their marketing and costs via their packaging. Both simple great product brands. And one’s I seem to choose often nowadays.
Being in the Marketing world as a career does sort of taint me to all the “packaging” gimmicks in today’s world. I much prefer quality brand marketing that focuses on the product not the wrapper. A perfect example is the new Mcguire's polishes. Same blah tan bottles and they will sell the crap out of those.
You can take either a superior quality product or a superior value product and wrap them in a dog crap wrapper and still sell the hell out of them. Duragloss’s packiging is “dog crap”in today’s marketing world and I still LOVE to buy and use their products.

But that's the professional line...that and the detailer line have "blah" packaging, because those customers are buying based on other factors. Meg's consumer line that is sold at retail has flashier packaging (not sure I would call it gimmicky).

Re: SEMA 2018... 2019 Products
I have LOTS of questions about 3D's super wheel cleaner, APC, & degreaser but I think i'll save them for another thread. There must be some clever chemistry going on there (hint peek the sds)
btw big respect for companies like Meguiar's & 3D that make sds sheets freely available online

Packaging “gimmicks” are all to do with brand position not brand proposition.
Authentic looking, no-gimmick packaging is still packaging with purpose. You simply prefer a brand which attempts to communicate product quality in a low-key way instead of with design trends. Both can be equally #### products.
Value is where cost and performance cross over, in the case of Ammo products, they may all be brilliant products and all have clean, modern packaging but their value is low compared to a poorboys product because typically you’ll have a higher expectation with the more expensive, sleeker looking product.
This also spills into brand psychology as one could also be psychosomatically affected by the branding and have a heightened sense of ‘value’.
In the end it’s all deliberate design to achieve a market position which suits the brand proposition by aligning value with expectation. This happens at all points across the budget to premium range.
But as someone in marketing you’d know all this.
Edit: Apologies to those here for the original topic.
