Clearcoat edge line from new paint job

    Hi all!

You may remember me as the moron who hand compounded through his blue BRZ’s clearcoat.

Long story short: I got the rear quarter resprayed (color blended, whole quarter panel plus sail panel plus rocker recleared)

They did a good job with the clearcoat texture and the color match.

i noticed today, however, that the mask tape line in the wheel well is really too far out for no reason (near/touching the actual plane of the rocker panel.)

I don’t think this could really be comepltely fixed unless I demanded a new clearcoat job (which means they will have to pop out the rear quarter glass again and detrim...etc.)

This being on the edge of a body line, it’s actially incredibly hard to spot.

my question is: should I have the shop try and wetsand out the line? I feel like there is a good chance that could just make it worse. If the line is not gonna start flaking and peeling, I am inclined to leave it since no one but me will ever see it. I only found out because I was changing wheels and carefully scrutinizing the new job. It’s been a roller coaster of a week because of my eff up and I would rather start enjoying my car, as long as this won’t lead to the clearcoat failing.

Part of the problem that makes the edge show is also that it looks like they sanded and prepped the “lip”, but did not restore its shine when some of the new clearcoat didn’t make it that far inward.

Pictures of the match and the car, for those who are interested:

I’ve seen these before, it’s gonna peel and keep peeling. I’ve wet sanded them to “smooth it over” but it’s just a bandaid on a constantly bleeding wound.

Yes, bring it back. That's never going to be right. Not what you paid for.

Thanks for the advice. Is the only way to get it right to completely reclear the whole panel? I am happy with how everything else turned out... Is it possible to spot repair this lip in a way that would prevent future flaking? I don't mind too much how it looks because it's not really visible at all.

Thanks for sharing the pics Guz.

Yeah, I’m with Eric- that wouldn’t fly for me. As he mentioned it looks like a recipe for premature failure.

Sorry you’ve gotta chase after them on this.

Thanks, I will go in on Monday and ask them what they can do for me.

I am expecting an uphill battle, though. What recourse do I have if they don't honor it and redo the clearcoat? (they may claim the hard line it as normal/unavoidable)

I didn't go through the insurance on this, so I don't have an agent to go bat for me.

customer pay carries more weight in most body shops than insurance claims,,IMHO opinion the insurance industry ruined the auto body repair industry but thats another story.

I know you said you are moving so asking for a lifetime warranty on it won't help much,,maybe they could "burn it in" with clear or something like that so the whole 1/4 wouldn't need to be redone

Most reputable shops stand behind their work. My body shop offers me a free lifetime warranty on all of their paint jobs. You shouldn’t have to work too hard to get them to fix this problem.
