What makes iron removing products so expensive?

I have ordered Ferrous Dueller this time around instead of Iron-X. Feels like the product takes more time to work... maybe it's just me. On the plus side the smell is less agressive.

As for price, I was looking at the price list from a local warehouse for the car wash industry and the fallout remover was much less expensive that any other products I have ever seen. So i will most likelly give it a try when I run out of FD, which should be soon I think.

So my guess is that hype is a big part of it, will know when I try this stuff.

The active ingredient is thioglycolic acid, the active ingredient in hair perm treatment. It is quite expensive in the form it comes in from chemical suppliers and it is temperature sensitive in pure form so it is perishable in shipping.

This is the answer, pure and simple--the active ingredient is an expensive chemical. It's been around for a long time (1930's IIRC) and has been used as a rust remover for almost as long. Just took a long time for someone to figure out how to market it to us so that we would buy a $15-20 bottle of wheel cleaner.
