I've never been able to find the Amazon Car Detailing Discussion Forum - the forum where Amazon has staff and community members hanging out to provide "service" i.e. how-to information to enable their customers to use the product they bought from Amazon.

Just pointing out that for some reason, eBay, Harbor Freight and Amazon simply don't offer a quality car detailing discussion forums to support their customers - but we do...

Not trying to be a hard ass (I actually don't like playing "moderator"), but you are breaking a forum rule. See the part I made RED

    Forum Rules

The purpose of Autogeekonline.com is for detailing discussion, providing a place for likeminded auto "Geeks" to share knowledge and partake in fellowship.

    1. The AutogeekOnline discussion forum is exclusively sponsored by Autogeek.com. Product discussion should be limited to products that are available from Autogeek.com and PBMA's family of websites.

Links, videos or recommendations to competing products and companies that are not available through Autogeek.com will be moved to the Moderators forum and offenders will be warned or simply placed into the SELF-BANNED category of member groups on this forum.

Repeated linking and recommendations of products not available through Autogeek.com may result in a permanent ban. Moderators have the right to edit any posts that contain links, recommendations or other information pertaining to competing companies that are not associated with Autogeek.com

    2. No arguing with Moderators or Administrators.

    3. You are welcome to disagree but you must be polite.

    4. No bashing any company or their products. No bashing other people. If you can't say anything nice about someone, then don't say anything at all, this also includes talking to others in a demeaning manner.

REMEMBER this forum is here for those that are new to detailing and those that have been doing this for years. We expect that you treat everyone with respect no matter what their level of detailing is. We all had to start somewhere.

    5. Forum Nicknames and Avatars must be family friendly, they cannot even hint towards anything raunchy, sleazy, sexual or inappropriate. When in doubt we will err on the side of caution and ask you to choose a different Avatar or Nickname.

    6. E-mail addresses cannot be used as a forum nickname.

    7. If any thread gets off topic it will be at the discretion of the moderator to close and/or move it to moderators corner.

    8. Keep language "G Rated", this includes insinuations. If you wouldn't say it in front of your grandparents, your parents or your children, then you shouldn't probably be posting to the AutogeekOnline forum.

    9. Self-promoting clickable links are not allowed in your posts. Detailers can put a link to their company in their signature, as long as they are not selling anything but their services.

    10. Moderators have the right to move any thread that does not follow within the AGO rules to moderators corner.

    11. Only one account per member! The only conceivable reason for multiple accounts would be for fraudulent activity. You will be banned for this action immediately.

    12. Continuously breaking the rules to disrupt the online community will result in you being banned from the forum.

    13. No Commercial sales, personal sales or samples from competing companies. One post trying to promote and you will have banned yourself permanently. This is a private forum not an open forum. No links to outside companies for sales either.

    14. All messages posted to AutogeekOnline become the property of Autogeek.net. and may not be deleted without first obtaining permission.

    15. No personal attacks toward members or non-members will be tolerated.

    Exceptions:
We stand behind our Moderators, if our Moderators think you're causing problems for the online community they are empowered to take whatever action necessary to correct the problem.

    Rule Infraction Enforcement
Everyone makes mistakes however; pushing the house rules to the limit will not be tolerated. Therefore, chronic and severe violators of AGO rules will be warned, put on a Queue (time-out), or completely banned based on the severity of the violation. We will apply rule enforcement as follows:

1st time offense - Warning: Minor rule infractions, you will be sent a PM or email by a moderator pointing out the infraction. There will be no action at this time outside of the warning.

2nd time offense - Queue: This will give you a 24 hour up to a two week forum break. This will occur after you have been warned previously or if you are involved with bashing of other members, being a hot-head, spamming, bad language, posting inappropriate materials.

3rd and last time - Banned: You will have effectively banned yourself if you are a repeat offender or if you are involved with any of the following....blatant spamming/selling, attacking forum moderators, pornography, racial/sexist/threatening posts, trolling, fraud, liable/slander, multiple accounts, shills.

And here's the same product on our store for approximately $6.00 more...

Griot's Garage 5" Orbital Conversion Kit

Also - The thicker Griot's foam pads will rotate really well with the Griot's polishers. This is because this tool has the power to rotate and oscillate thicker pads.

I used these in my write-up here,

    Here's one tiny excerpt...

Step 4: The Correction Step with Griot's Complete Compound

    Products used

    • Griot's Complete Compound
    • Griot's Garage 5.5" Orange Foam Correction Pad
    • Speed Setting - 6.0

There is literally TONS of how-to information in this how-to article.

I do like system approaches and while you can use any DA pads and polishes in a " mix and match approach" successfully there is something in my mind about having some folks engineer and design things to work together. Even though those that do mix n match can get the same results and maybe even better, I believe staying in the family and following the manufacturers instructions may make it easier for a first timer. Just my opinion...

Having the best first experience at this stuff is rare but there is nothing like researching the heck out of this stuff and then "feeling" it all work.

Best of luck and enjoy the heck out of it. Let us know how it comes out.
Thanks for the advice. I'm pretty excited about all this.

For safety I use masking tape so I don't damage plastics and rubber with my da. And the cleaning is easier after polishing also with masking tape covering the trim and rubber. You'll only need to remove the tape and done. If the car have heavy contaminants I would use a tar remover so the claying will go smoother. Then some ipa of some sort for check your work after both compound and polish. Just so the polishing oils don't cover the accually result. And you don't have to use these brands but they are good. And for last is some good lighting to see what you are doing
Just remember to do test spots. Your girlfriends car i believe is on the soft side of hardness of the clearcoat and your car is on the hard side. So on the test spot beginning with the least aggressiv pads and polish. Then wipe down with ipa and check if it is not enough step up with a more aggressiv combo and check again and so on to you are satisfied with the level of cut.
Great points and thanks for the additional advice.

You describe her paint condition as basically hammered but it may also be thin to boot as evidenced by your suspicions of clearcoat failure. I wouldn't go nuts outta the gate and in my experience Toyota paint has been on the softer side for me.

Looks like you are on a great path there, Espresso. The ordering and anticipation are great, but nothing like jumping in there and learning!

You'll do fine, and you will learn along the way and find little tricks and/or pad/product combo's that work best for you.

IMO, that is the real fun in detailing.

Thank you for taking what I posted the correct manner in which I intended. I'm well aware that our members and the thousands of "lurkers" that read the information on this forum to help them with their projects buy from both Autogeek and from other sources and that's good and that's how it is.

Like I said, I don't really like playing the role of Moderator as a Moderator is basically a Policeman enforcing rules. I'd rather just be the "how-to guy" but we no longer have Mods on the forum and good moderating is actually as skill that some people have and most don't, kind of like police - some people are cut out to be police while MOST of us are not cut out to be police. (and my dad is a retired State Police Officer)

With the new owners of Autogeek we have relaxed enforcing all of the forum rules. At the same time - sometimes I use a reported post as a "Teaching Moment" for present members and future members and all of the lurkers we get here each and every day and you hit the nail on the head.

I sincerely appreciate the above statement.

Autogeek has a very exhaustive store and great customer care staff for helping people not only "buy" products but for "using" the products they buy. You don't get that at Amazon, Harbor Freight or eBay.

The time I invest in answering questions on the forum as well as writing how-to articles is a form of customer care, that is helping people that buy from us and all the people that don't buy from us figure out how to use their tools, pads and products to get the results they're looking for from their financial investment plus their time investment.

So while it's not the fun part of my job to point out that one of the forum rules is to avoid linking to outside vendors of products since outside vendors of products don't offer any support for purchase with them on our forum (Autogeek does this), once in a while I use these situations as a teaching moment.

I for one practice doing business with companies that provide support. It's simply the right thing to do and my mom and dad brought me up to do the right thing.
