    Hypothetical Scenario

Let's say you have a new work vehicle that gets driven everyday like a police car, taxi, fire chief SUV or daily driver with 40 mile round trip commute. Assume no dents, collisions, mishaps, etc. You are in California and don't have extremes in the winter or summer, too. The vehicle is not garaged at night.

How many years can you keep the clearcoat perfected using only clay bar, Ironx, DA, AIO and topping wax? You get to detail every two weeks and can use any of the aforementioned products as much as you wish. No coatings or other long term protectants, compounds or extraordinary products. The only polish and cleaner is your AIO.

What would you choose and how many years or decades could you keep the finish proud to show before the clearcoat starts to fail?

I would choose all 5, and only use the AIO once maybe twice a year at most and the paint should look great for as long as the car lasts.

Thanks. By "What would you choose?" I meant what specific products would you choose?

    Re: Hypothetical Scenario

    Background:

    •California Living:
    -Exposure to the Sun's damaging
UV-rays, IMO, is "the thing" that
    can eventually take the ultimate
    toll on vehicle paint systems.

    •Dr. David Ghodoussi (OPT, Inc.)
-has stated in his podcasts that the
    half-life of Clear-Coat paint is 5 years.

    {A Short Dr. G. Bio:
Dr. Ghodoussi received his Ph.D. and
Master's degrees in Polymer and Organic
    Chemistry from Oregon State University.
He also holds Bachelor's of Science degrees
in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from
the University of California in Santa Barbara.

Prior to OPT, Inc. he worked for over 12
years as an Organic Chemist overseeing
    research and development focused in
    polymers and automotive paint formulations.}

-Dr. G holds two UV patents for his
    Optimum Car Wax.

    ***********************************

    Using the scenarios/criteria that
    you have described above...

    •Initially, I'd:
    -wash/dry
    -decontaminate:
    a. IronX (or one of its ilk)
    b. Clay
    -AIO: Finish Kare #215
    -"Wax": Finish Kare 1000P

    •Every two weeks thereafter:
    -Wash:
    a. Meguiar's D114; or:
    b. McKee's 37 N-914 RW
    -"Wax": Optimum Car Wax

    Notes:
1.) IMO: Sometimes a weekly wash
(and then OCW) may be needed
    between the twice monthly regimen.

    2.) Every six months:
    -repeat what was performed in
    the above listed "Initial" processes...
-use "The Baggie Test" results for
the need to decontaminate, or not.

    Re: Hypothetical Scenario

Great hypothetical situation.... I'm so glad we don't actually live in hypothetical situations...

I'm going to call Dr. Ghodoussi today as I have a question to ask him about UV protection. I'll share what I find on the forum. Until then, based on what I know today (and this may change today), I would use the cleaner/wax you propose in you list of product for your hypothetical situation and add the Optimum Car Wax as a TOPPER for the horizontal surfaces as a form of cheap insurance.

    See my recent article here,

Patented UV Protection - Optimum Car Wax - by Dr. Ghodoussi at Autogeek.com

And for what it's worth I've never cared for the term AIO when the term cleaner/wax says it all and has been around a lot longer. Same type of product or category of product, just different letters in the names.

And here's my article on the topic of topping...
