    Polishing over Compound Residue?

Hey everyone, I have seen some talk of detailers compounding a car, and go straight to polishing without wiping off the compound residue. OPT advertises this a lot. So just wondering if any if you guys do the same thing, maybe with other brands? Whats your thoughts on this technique? Thanks!

    Re: Polishing over Compound Residue?

    Since compounds and polishes
    don't need to "dry":
I try to remove any compounding (or polishing)
residues, with an appropriately tasked towel,
    immediately after I'm done buffing a panel/section.

In an attempt to further clarify:
I don't use a "panel wipe" product between
    the compounding and polishing steps...
or even between the final polishing and LSP
application steps. That is, unless the LSPs'
    manufacturers recommend otherwise.

Good question, I wondered about that myself. Good to know you don't need a product panel wipe down unless it is required. Thank you

    Re: Polishing over Compound Residue?

I continue to wipe clean any panel worked for a couple of reasons. First is to certainly see how effective that last approach was in correcting conditions and not only on my test spots but as i continue around the vehicle. I want to look at it "finished" after an aggressive approach to make sure i get the expected results. Secondly and depending on the abrasive technology used (as Mike P. talks about) i don't want to leave behind any SMAT particles that, after breaking down to their smallest pieces, are still bigger than what i will be using to polish out further with my next product. If it was a DAT product...maybe. But i still want to see if i need to hit that section again with another few passes and i can't do that until i've wiped clean that last section.

Just me and i would like to hear more of the OPT logic or why any others would opt to not wipe after compounding. Could be a significant time saver. There are always new ideas with what we do and i leave my mind open to any and all.

It is all about saving time and it's fine for production work IMO but when you're doing a high end detail the compound should be removed first.

Why would you not remove the residue to see your progress? It takes like seconds. No point in putting a more aggressive compound in the arena than needed.
