Restoring interior plastic trim

A friend just purchased a 2007 Avalanche with the decorative plastic trim on the dash. The dealership did a horrible job detailing the car and he asked for help with detailing. I hit a snag with the plastic decorative trim. Nothing is visible however when you touch the plastic it has a definite grit or feels like overspray. What would be the best way to restore to a smooth finish without causing any scratches? I've attempted to use Plexus and it restored the shine/clarity, but didn't even remotely restore a smooth finish.

Before even reading your last sentence I too was thinking Plexus. Since it worked on the shine I'll say claybar (to smooth); Plexus (to shine).

You're talking about the fake woodgrain or fake brushed aluminum trim, right? Clay it and hit it with 205, or pick up some PlastX.
