Why the flat pads? Why the Griot Garage DA? Im in the market for an orbital too and thought the PC was the best (since everywhere I see it is referenced). Do I really need more power?

Flat pads give u full surface contact, u need that with a DA. The Griots is way more powerful, plain and simple.

To be on the safe side, I would get the backing plate directly from whatever manufacturer you decide to go with because it might mess up the counter weight and it won't orbit right (probably unlikely, but you never know). Ans also get FLAT pads. I got CSS pads and I am sorry I did.

    Which Mequiars backing plate?

And why Mequiars? Does Griot's make one?

What other accessories do you recommend (other than flat pads)?

The Meguiar's backing plate works best and is recommended by Meguiar's for using the Dual Action (DA) Microfiber (MF) correction system.
The Hook and loop on the Megs backing plate are shorter, creates less heat and has been tested and proven to work with the Megs DA MF system.

Once you get the DA (I have both PCxp and Griot's...I like them both...the Griots is a good choice) you will need polishing product.

To get you started I personally would recommend:

For the Foam Pads Megs M105 and M205.
NOTE: The 105/205 work best with the Kevin Brown Method.
    or
Meg Ultimate Compound and Megs Ultimate Polish
NOTE: The Ultimate products may be easier to start with.

    and

    Megs DA Microfiber Correction Compound
Megs DA Microfiber Cutting Discs, 5 inches

    I knw where you're going with this...HA
