Flat black paint on a '69 mach 1

How to take care of the flat black paint on a 1969 Mach 1

I am new to the forum and would like to ask a couple of questions.

I have a 1969 red Mach 1 Mustang with flat black hood and rear spoiler.

Just purchased the porter cable DA from you guys, haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Also have a 1965 AC Cobra (replica) black with minor swirl marks. Any suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Well for one thing, don't use the buffer on the flat black paint unless you don't want it flat anymore. Be sure to mask it off before you polish anything near it, too.

When you say flat black. Is that because it used to be shiny, and now it's oxidized? I'm assuming it would have the factory single stage paint?

I have a feeling it's not actually flat black on purpose, although it may appear that way, ha.

I believe it is supposed to have a matte black finish.

Huh, no kidding. I never knew that. I didn't think they were laying down flat paint back then.

Well, I don't have much experience with flat paint. At least not flat paint that is on purpose, ha. But I agree with Shiny...you definitely don't wanna take the DA to that. Tape it off.

As for the rest of the paint. It really depends how far you wanna go. Any possibility of getting some pictures up?

It's tough to say what your paint needs without some closeup shots.

Swissvax has a product line called Opaque specifically formulated for matte paint. I use it often on older mopars and it works wonders. It is a full system from the wash all the way through the wax.
