Getting dried mud and dirt off of your interior carpet and upholstery?

I'm not faced with this issue, but I often wondered how to best deal with it. Basically how do you clean an interior in such shape? I'm thinking you wouldn't just start shampooing because when you scrub you'd be working the mud and dirt into the the carpet or upholstery even further. Would you just get a dry brush to break it up and then vacuum as much up as possible and then shampoo?

I think that's what I would do, at least to start. Might want to hit it with an extractor just before shampooing. (that way you get up as much as you possibly can)

But that is just my 2 cents.

you can use a brass brush to break it up first then vacuum first with a brush tool then follow with a claw or crevice tool depending on the area. After the mud is mostly gone the stains will be the issue. Treat them like any other stain, (pretreat, then extract or steam with apc or prefered carpet cleaner)
