Ha Ha, quite an experience. Well, as I see it, it's not a mistake unless you fail to learn from it. In that case, I don't think you made any mistakes.

^^^ That is a lesson that should be taught to everyone starting out in ANY line of work. I bet it is pretty typical for people with newly acquired skills to underestimate a task. I may have learned this the hard way too...

    I agree completely!

The going price for kerosene is about $2.75 / gallon, what's the cost of tar removers?

Fill up a spray bottle with kerosene and liberally spray the affected area and let sit. You should immediately see streaks of black begin to run down the side of the panel. Tar has grit in it so don't rub too hard. If you have a power washer you might try blasting the debris once the kerosene softens it up.

Once it's completely gone, clay and detail the area to your satisfaction.

if I do a good claying, do I risk marring the paint if I compound with some tar spots or will compounding remove the tar in the process??

    Thanks
Try Surf City Garage Road Trip Grime Destroyer cut 1:1 with distilled water. Spray on, let sit about a minute then use a soft wet sponge to remove - don't rub very hard! Wash well when done. Reseal and or rewax.

CAUTION: can cause perminant irreversable damage if you get it in your eyes!!!

Make sure that you thoroughly clean the panel where you used the tar remover before claying. If you don't get it all off, the clay will stick to it. I've dropped a few clay bars on the floor, even with plenty of clay lube, when I hit a spot where I didn't completely clean it off and the clay bar "hit the brakes" as my hand kept moving.
