I should tape more than I do, its safety. Pay attention around the rear glass hatch, under the side mirrors (so as not to knock the body of the buffer into mirrors), and around emblems. The corners/edges do seem pretty hardy to buffing but unscientific at best. I dont own a paint guage, so purely going on my own feelings from current and past Vette. Also the little edge on the targa (if you have coupe) and rear diffuser which are both plastic. Taping makes it easier and gives a little wiggle room.
