Talking How Big Of A Difference

I am still trying to make up my mind on what to purchase. I am looking at either
    The Poorboys Kit:
Porter Cable 7424XP Dual Action Polisher
    5 inch Flexible Backing Plate
16 oz. Poorboy’s Light Abrasive Swirl Remover SR1
16 oz. Poorboy’s Medium Super Swirl Remover SSR2.5
    8 oz. Poorboy’s Natty’s Blue Paste Wax
    16 oz. Poorboy’s Spray & Gloss
16 oz. Poorboy’s Spray & Wipe Waterless Wash
CCS 6.5 inch Gray Dual Action Finishing Pad
CCS 6.5 inch Orange Dual Action Light Cutting Pad
CCS 6.5 inch White Dual Action Polishing Pad
    2 Cobra Microfiber Towels, 16 x 16 inches
12 oz. Pinnacle XMT Polishing Pad Cleaner

I would also add the Poorboy’s World Black Hole Show Glaze

    Or
    A Pinacle/Wolfgang Combo

    16 oz. Pinnacle Bodywork Shampoo
8 oz. Pinnacle Souverän™ Paste Wax
16 oz. Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion
16 oz. Pinnacle Crystal Mist Carnauba Detail Spray
2 Cobra Indigo Edgeless Microfiber Polishing Cloths
    1 Foam Wax Applicator Pad
    1 Microfiber Applicator Pad
16 oz. Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover 3.0
16 oz. Wolfgang Finishing Glaze 3.0
Porter Cable 7424XP Variable Speed Polisher
    Porter Cable 7424XP Wrench
    Porter Cable 7424XP Counter Weight
Dual Action 5 Inch HD Hook & Loop Backing Plate
CCS 6.5 inch Orange Light Cutting Pad
CCS 6.5 inch Gray Finishing Pad
Which one is going to be the best bang for my buck? Does Souveran provide that much greater appearence for the cost? This is for a 2005 Black Saab 9-3. What will be the major differences?

That 5 inch backing plate is going to be too small for those 6.5 inch pads. Get the 5.5 inch pads, 3 of each(orange, white, soft green, grey and blue). I'd go with the wolfgang polishes over the poorboy's. Just preference.

I have read here that the 5" plate is preferable to allow for greater protection between the pad and plate. In a few of the product descriptions it says to use the 5" plate rather than a 6" plate for the 6.5" pads. I guess this could also be preferance?.... I've heard of using the 5 inch plate with the 6 inch lambs wool pad under a bonnet. Haven't heard of it being better to use a 5 inch plate w/a 6.5 inch pad.

Why would the packages have a 5in backing plate and include 6.5 inc pads?

I just noticed AG's instructions for the 6.5 CCS pads. They do say to use a 5 inch plate. I'm saying I've never heard of that, and always use a 6 inch with my 6.5 pads on a PC. The flex plate is 5.5 inches, and I use the 6.5 pads on that as well. I haven't heard of others doing that either, but just because I haven't heard of it, doesn't mean anything.

...waiting for Mike, Dwayne or Meghan to chime in on this one...

I'm curious as well and am contemplating a PC package purchase in the near future.

Re: How Big Of A Difference

If your going to use a 5 inch BP. You should just get the 5.5 inch pads and same $4 a piece over the 6.5 inch. The 5.5 inch pads will work better with the PC(at least the old PC). I just don't understand why you would want a 1.5 inch overhang. The down pressure pushes the pad into the paint. So, 1.5 inches wouldn't be doing anything. They sell a 3.5 inch BP for the 4 inch pads. There is no 2.5 inch BP for the PC. What are you supposed to use for the 5.5 inch pads? A 3.5 inch BP?

Re: How Big Of A Difference

I used the 5.5 inch ccs pads this weekend to polish my sister's suv and I definitely prefer them over the 6.5 inch ccs pads. The old PC (which is what I have) has an easier time spinning the 5.5 inch pads. The one thing I do miss about the 6.5 inch pads is the thickness of the 6.5 inch pad lets the PC tilt a little yet it maintains the face of the pad relatively flat against the paint. The 5.5 inch pad's lower profile makes it less forgiving if you tilt the PC. What I also like about the 5.5 inch pads is that the lower profile also means less product soak-up, thus more product conserved.
