Discolored Roof After Vinyl Wrap Removal

    Hi all!

I recently removed the black vinyl wrap on the roof of my wife's 2018 Toyota Prius with white tri-color paint. It was on the car for 4+ years. Shortly after doing so, I noticed that the paint became yellow and discolored. I tried IronX, Clay, light polish, etc. but nothing has helped so far. Any suggestions welcomed. Thanks!

Re: Discolored Roof After Vinyl Wrap Removal

I had a vinyl wrap on the hood of my FJ Cruiser for about 3 years, I removed it after it went bad, the heat from the engine led to mud staining it if it wasn't washed immediately after going off-road. I was sure there was some darkening of the paint where the vinyl had been, it is silver and the wrap matched the panel lines on the hood so it was hard to spot unless you knew what you were looking for. Nothing seemed to be able to shift it, so I lived with it for a couple of years. Then I started to get some clear coat failure, unlikely to be caused by the wrap as one wasn't under the wrap, and the paint is now 12 years old. I fixed the clear coat issue on the hood then sprayed the wrap area on the hood with Plastidip, so I can't see it anymore. Plastidip should be easier to remove, the wrap took me 7-8 hours to remove, and it's not staining like the wrap did. Sorry, this isn't much help, but if I was to go back in time, I'd say don't wrap.

Unfortunately, it looks to me like the clear was pulled/failed when the vinyl was removed. Anyone else?

Is the paint smooth to the touch or rough? If it is a stain, the best option would be to rewrap it.

Isn't vinyl generally pretty easy to remove - aka, low adhesive tack ?
It was on the roof though, and if non garaged, maybe the sun accerated the bond.

There is a blurb-verbiage of PPF films, to the wording of - around the 8 year mark, PPF must be removed as it creates a -superbond- to the paint
