    1986 Suburban single stage

    Aloha

i recently picked up a 1986 Chevy suburban which I believe to be original paint. From my research I believe it to be a single stage paint—1990 is when I think they went to base coat/cleaner coat. I am
trying to retstore the paint to make it look as good as it can. So far I have competed an iron decon, clay bar, and mesquires 7 to help hydrate the paint. Would you recommend doing a compound next or move onto a polish. I bought the Meguires ultimate compound and ultimate polish. Is it ok to use the compound after I used the number 7? Thanks

You always start with the least aggressive method first. So try the polish first and see your results, if it is not producing like you want it to, go to the next aggressive step and so on.

And yes, you can compound/polish after #7.

Keep us posted, good luck and have fun!

I personally wouldn't use a compound. If this is the original paint from 1986 I doubt it's as pristine as it was when it was originally painted. I'd go with a light polish but if you are hell bent on compounding, you need to at least get a paint depth gauge and see how much paint you're working with before you start removing any.

Thanks. Im going to put another coat of the no.7 on and let it sit over night and attempt to polish to see how it turns out. 1986 Suburban single stage-3dfcd451-ef18-4489-aee4-03089ef23d84-jpg

I agree with Scott i.e. try the polish first and see if your happy.
