Saving this '02 Taurus clear coat
I've got this '02 Taurus that has aged unusually badly on the hood roof and trunk top, and if I can just get these parts addressed the car will look so much better. I'm not aiming for anything close to perfect...just trying to make these look better so your eye isn't drawn right to them. Rest of the body's paint isn't bad at all.
Hopefully what I'm seeing here is just the clear coat failing and all it needs is a sanding, 2k clear applied, some high grit sanding, and buffing. The directions I've found so far are to first sand with 600 all over and especially over where the edge of the clear is peeling up. Clear coat, sand with 1500, then buff. Sound about right? If it's so far degraded that it actually needs some color work, it's ok I'd rather not deal with that part. I just want to throw about $100 bucks at it and if it looks better then I'll be happy.
Any suggestions on how I should approach this? Thanks.

Im not a painter, but have helped a friend over the years in his shop during some winters.
If that clear was not already flaking off then you could have more than likely gotten away with just respraying the clear. But its to far gone at this point and would need the base resprayed too.
If it were mine, i would just first visit automotivetouchup.com and order your base color and clear through them. I have used this company b4 for my own little spot repair and matched perfect. Thier areosol spray cans have spray tips that are made for this type of work, not normal rattle can tips.
Then id mask off and da sand the entire roof with 400grit, or try 600 if ya already have it. Prep and spray base. Then spray clear. Then finally ya can sand and buff.
Pm 2black1s for some help, he was a painter for years and has helped others with paint relaited issues.

Re: Saving this '02 Taurus clear coat
Thanks for the vote of confidence opie, but even I can't fix that.
But based on what the OP says he wants to do and expects, I'd simply scuff up the remaining clear coat with a scotchbrite pad and then spray some clear. I wouldn't even consider sanding and polishing... just spray the clear and call it a day.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Last thing. If I order some base color coat from touchupdirect, do I have to use THEIR 2K clear or can I use a different brand like Dupli-Color?
