Applying protectant to perforated leather
Hi all,
I have a 2023 VW GLI i picked up last week. I have some leather protectant (several to choose from in fact, Malco, Adams, Lexol, Griots) I want to get something on the leather realtively soon to try and keep it good.Especially on the drivers seat.
It is perforated leather, and im wondering if there are any tricks to apply protectant without getting it into the holes. The approach i have in my head is to butter an applicator and use that.

Applying it to an applicator vs directly on the seat is what I do.

Hi,
If I might ad. When you apply your conditioner to the app pad spread it around with your fingers so there's no clump of product. This will keep it from clogging the holes (pita to fix)
The leather on your GLI is coated from the factory. What this means is no product that you apply will actually protect/penetrate. It does make it look better if you like that sort of thing

My car has 20 year old perforated seats. I've used Duragloss, Mothers, Zaino, Leather Honey and Chemical guys and never had an issue with product build up in the perforations.

My suggestion would be to use a liquid rather than cream/balm product, this will not gum up the perforations.

This is my experience as well. Detailing products have never been the issue. Crumbs and stuff getting spilled on the seats is where you start seeing the clogging problems.
I detailed the perforated leather seats in our Acura last week with no issues at all. I simply applied the product to an applicator and worked it onto all of the surfaces. No issues at all with anything clogging up the tiny holes.
