Do water based polishes need IPA wipe down?

Here's how I got into thinking about this question. I was watching video of Sonax Profiline EX 04-06 polish and Jason in that video mentioned this is a water based polish.



Then In some thread on this forum (I guess it was discussion related Profiline Perfect Finish), someone mentioned you don't need IPA wipe down after using water based polishes. So my questions are:

1. Is this true that you don't need IPA wipe down?
2. What does water based exactly mean? Don't they have polishing oils in them?
3. If water based polish don't have oil in it then how would you compare it with oil based polish? What are the pros and cons?

I don't know if the answer is no across the board but the few water based polishes I've used don't need it. IDK what they use for lube but oil polish seems better

I think it depends, probably, on what your LSP is.

Unless a polish specifically states no prep is necessary, all polishes should be cleared from the surface...water based, water soluble or oil based. Just because something is water based or water soluble doesn't mean that a basic wipe off will remove small particle barriers. The barriers may prevent optimal clearcoat-LSP bonding.

Whether you use dilute IPA, mineral spirits or some expensive proprietary blend is up to you. If you're coating, you need direct bonding of the coating to the surface. Gyeon Primer, for example, doesn't require this prep step - if you wait 24h. Otherwise, it requires a prep.

Follow the instructions on the bottle, and if in doubt, contact the manufacturer.

I'd plan to use an IPA or something like eraser to "clean" the panel before applying protection.
