There is a ton of reading material in this one URL. I suggest you make a number of passes through the embedded links over the next few months and in the beginning focus on those that apply to your initial goals.

Welcome to the forum. When I started, I used my car as the test bed, so you are smarter than me already. The first thing I would do is examine a "sytstem approach". Pick a product supplier (ie. Optimum, Rupes, Meguiar's). Try one of their kits which include polishes, compounds, pads etc.). Try one on the test hood and keep experimenting unttil you get the results you like (I would tape off test sections, small like 4" x 4" to get most use out of the test mule). Once you are satified with the trial, proceed to the "real deal". Keep the test piece around for a couple of years and you can get a good laugh looking back and thinking " What was I thinking".

Mike Phillips has several books available on Autogeek. You will probably gain more knowledge by reading the Forum and asking questions. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained on the Forum.

In fact as you stated you have a rotary polisher look up Mike's guide to using a rotary.. they demand a little more from the user in terms of attention and technique than a DA, but at low speed (1000 rpm range), with foam pads and polishes are not the bringers of paint death some make out to be..
DO NOT CONFUSE DA TECHNIQUE FOR ROTARY TECHNIQUE... DA's are more forgiving..

The test panel was a smart move.. enjoy.. won't be long before you are getting a 3", 5" and a 6" backing plate and getting all over it...
