The key word is range...
There's no hard and fast rule except clearcoats don't like heat, that is heat is not good when buffing a clear coat.
I tend to do must of my heavy compounding in a range of 1200RPM to 1500RPM
Slow buffing at 600RPM to 900RPM
As long as I can remember I always see guys post something like,
Heat is needed to break the abrasives down
That's misinformation.
What breaks abrasives down is pressure over time.Heat is an uneccassary by-product of the buffing process.
Most important thing is to clean your pad often, whether using wool or foam.
Also, some modern compounds are formulated and designed for low RPM not high RPM M100 Pro Speed Compound is one of them...

Re: How to use a rotary buffer
This is awesome! Can't wait to try this. I get a lot of holograms with my wife's toyota van. The paint is so soft and couldnt figure out what was going on. I did my black sonata which is black a while back without defects.
I use the makita Rotary. With the 3m 3 step. Using lake country 8"pads. Orange white and grey. Her van is black as well. I am only using 600rpm while doing it. I am assuming I need to get a DA. I use a slow pace with side to side then up and down like a snake motion. Slight pressure. I cant figure out what I'm doing wrong. But I assuming from what Mike said not all finished can be done with a rotary. How can I be 100% sure this is my issue?
Now I do know I'm not a pro so that can be the issue. But with my sonata I had zero holograms and was newer to detailing.
And tips that I may over looked? Any advice will be great. I'm going to try Mikes steps and try again but these holograms drive me crazy lol!
Thanks so much Mike!

Hi Mike! Very nice work with the Rotary buffers! I do have an inquiry, is that the Makita 9227c Sander/Polisher?

Re: How to use a rotary buffer
Excellent, Mike.
It is a mystery to me how much negative feedback I get when I try to post a friendly response to questions about using a rotary buffer.
Anyone that gets a PE14 in their hands that is capable of feeling the tool and using a little finesse will learn just how well this machine works.
It is the finest tool that I have ever owned with the 3401 right up there with it. The other quality rotary buffers for sale at AG are also good machines.
Thanks again for trying to educate people on this subject.

Re: How to use a rotary buffer
Great point on the aversion to heat! I am a rotary user for ALL correction and have slowed down my speeds dramitacally over the years. I have done this with both SMATs and DATs and have significantly improved my finesse with the tool. I will admit to getting comfortable with my rotary shortly after switching over to it and tried to extract both less time and faster results by cranking that puppy up. Nope...slow down and work the product with a refined touch and approach thereby generating less heat! It works so much better when you do it right.

If you mean the one in this picture,
The answer is "yes".
At this time we no longer sell this Makita tool or any Makita tools. There is a Makita apron on the AG store page for Makita though.
