Friday June 8th - Tools & Topics

Class starts at 7:30am sharp and goes until 5:30pm

Morning Session

Coffee and donuts are provided

Short Stroke Free Spinning Random Orbital Polishers

***Multiple-Step or Show Car Detailing***

Short Stroke Polishers
Short stroke polishers are considered 8mm orbit stroke length or smaller. For example, the Porter Cable is an 8mm orbit stroke length polisher and thus considered a short stroke polisher. The Griot's 3" Random Orbital Polisher is a 5mm orbit stroke length polisher and also considered a short stroke polishers.

The first short stroke free spinning random orbital polisher to mainstream was the Porter Cable 7424 and 7336 back in the early 1990s when Meguiar's introduced it to the car detailing world as an safe alternative to rotary buffers. Since then, a number of tools have been introduced that like the Porter Cable polishers, use an 8mm orbit stroke length with a free spinning spindle bearing and a counterweight to provide inertia and thus maintain pad rotation under pressure and around curved body panels, these would include,

  • Porter Cable 7424XP and all older versions
  • Griot's Garage 6" Random Orbital Polisher
  • Meguiar's G110, G110v2 and MT300
  • Chemical Guys TORQ 10FX
  • Chemical Guys Torq X
  • Chicago Electric 6" Polisher (Harbor Freight DA)
  • Shurhold Dual Action Polisher
  • DAS-6 Pro Dual Action Polisher
  • Plus other no name brands that have copied the Porter Cable design

Many benefits to short stroke polishers
Ever since the Porter Cable was introduced and now all the various versions of this design, MILLIONS of cars have been de-swirled and the paint perfected to show car quality. Besides being used to correct, polish and seal paint these short stroke polishers are also good for machine wet sanding and with the attachment of a brush, machine scrubbing. Short stroke polishers also work great for mechanically decontaminating paint using clay pads and we'll cover this in the class too. While the current rage is for free spinning long stroke polishers, the tried and true short stroke polishers are a LOT less prone to pad stalling simply due to the nature of the short stroke.

In fact, If I could only choose two tools to do all my detailing work I would choose a rotary polisher and a short stroke polishers. With just these two tools I can do every car and boat detailing procedure under the sun. I cannot do every procedure with just one tool and I cannot do every procedure with any other combination of just 2 tools. So don't get caught up in the latest rage, attend this class and learn how to maximize the effectiveness of short stroke polishers!

In this class you will learn how to,

  1. Mechanically decontaminate paint
  2. Compound to correct paint and remove swirls, scratches, water spots and oxidation.
  3. Polish paint to maximize gloss, shine and clarity.
  4. Machine apply a wax or synthetic paint sealant to protect the paint and lock in the shine.

Product include,
  1. Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay and Clay Lube
  2. Pinnacle Advanced Compound
  3. Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish
  4. Pinnacle Liquid Souveran Wax
  5. Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax

Pads include Lake Country 5.5" Flat Pads

  1. Orange Foam Cutting Pads
  2. White Foam Polishing Pads
  3. Black Foam Waxing Pads

About your instructor, Mike Phillips

I have been teaching classes on car detailing since 1987, that's 31 years.

The picture below was taken in 1987 after I taught my first detailing class using student cars as well as my Sanger Flat Bottom Drag Boat as demo panel for machine compounding and machine polishing techniques.

MikePhillips.jpg

At this time he was a Trainer for Meguiar's for Oregon, Washington and Idaho where his primary job was to call on body shops, detail shops and dealerships and teach their staff how to use Meguiar's Professional Line.

Overcoming adversity
In 1986, at the age of 26 I was in a boating accident involving my own Sanger Drag Boat. I never let this slow me down or hinder me from my passion for polishing paint and teaching others the art craft of detailing cars and the art of polishing paint.

Published Author
To date I have five how-to books in print, iBook and ebook forms. I'm the only detailer and detailing instructor with how-to books written for both FLEX tools and RUPES tools with all work and photography performed by me personally.

Professional Background

Meguiar's Corporate Writer

400_Mike_Biz_Cards_02.JPG

In 2002, I was hired by Barry Meguiar to be the Corporate Writer for Meguiar's. I took over all the writing responsibilities for the company that Barry Meguiar' normally did himself.

Meguiar's Internet Technical Specialist

In 2004 I transitioned from the Corporate Write position to Meguiar's Internet Technical Specialist where I brought up the MeguiarsOnline.com car detailing discussion forum and answered questions on Meguiar's products as took on the responsibility of Primary Instructor for their car detailing classes.

400_Mike_Biz_Cards_01.JPG

Cyber-world to Real-world training classes
On July 31st, 2002, I organized a detailing class at Meguiar's Corporate Office for the members of an online Mercedes-Benz club through a Mercedes-Benz discussion forum. What I didn't know was that there were not only Mercedes-Benz club members at the class but there were also members from other car clubs at this first class, which was organized through a discussion forum. I took pictures and documented the class and shared them on the Mercedes-Benz forum because at the time, Meguiar's didn't have a discussion forum.

The next week students at this Mercedes-Benz class started calling Mike and e-mailing him asking,

When can our club have a class?

That snowballed to become so popular that these Saturday classes continues to this day. Management at Meguiar's came to me and told me they loved the passion I was creating for the Meguiar's brand by teaching classes and sharing the pictures and the passion online. Not knowing how to classify what I was doing they asked me to write my own job description which I did and this included, being the online voice for Meguiar's as well as being the Primary Instructor for the Saturday Detailing 101 classes and the Saturday Advanced Classes. Down the road a few years I started the Thursday Night Classes known as TNOGS, and then the Meguiar's Roadshow Classes.

Saturday Detailing 101

04_04_09OG001.jpg

Saturday Advanced Class
Many people that attended the Detailing 101 classes wanted to take their skill and knowledge to a higher level and this led to the advanced class where the topics of hand wet sanding, machine sanding and using rotary buffers were taught.

AdvancedClass6_033.jpg

Meguiar's Online Car Detailing Discussion Forum
Back in 2002 I started advocating to Meguiar's management to bring up their own forum. Because at that time, Meguiar's have a car detailing discussion forum and it would be years down the road before Facebook and other social media platforms like Twitter, SnapChat and Instagram would be introduced.

I would share the pictures from the Saturday classes on my own forum ShowCarGarage.com and also on the Autopia.org car detailing forum. After detailing a 1954 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 and then posting the pictures and the how-to information to my own forum, I then printed out the write-up and gave it to the Vice President of Meguiar's (at the time), Atticus Firey. A month later Atticus said to me,

I love these write-ups showing people how to use Meguiar's products but how come you're always posting them to your own forum?

That's when I explained to Atticus that I had to post them to my own forum (and the Autopia forum) because Meguiar's didn't have a forum.

That's when it final sunk it. That's when Atticus put two and two together and understood what I had been talking about for almost 2 years when I kept was asking Meguiar's to bring up their own discussion forum.

Atticus then said,

Make it happen

On January 24th, 2004 the MeguiarsOnline.com car detailing discussion forum went LIVE and the first post was a write-up I created by documenting a Saturday Detailing 101 Class I taught for a local Mini Cooper Club. That's also when I first met Richard Lin and together they detailed Richard's popular Mini Cooper Lil'Octane replacing Zaino with Meguiar's NXT.

Lil Octane
2NXToverZaino.jpg

(That was the start of the Zaino vs Meguiar's Wax War but that's another story for another time)

TNOG's
Mike also started the Thursday Night Open Garage Classes in 2006 and taught them until leaving Meguiar's to join Autogeek in 2009. Most people don't know but Mike originally started these on Wednesday nights but due to schedule conflicts moved them to Thursday nights. These also continue to this day.

2003IMG_0049.JPG

The Meguiar's Roadshow Class
The Meguiar's Saturday classes became incredibly popular and because Mike would take pictures and document the cars, the clubs, the fun and the passion online, people in other states asked if they could have a class in their hometown. With management's approval Mike started the Meguiar's Roadshow Classes conducting a total of 6 of these classes before leaving to work for Autogeek. This was another first in the industry.

The below pictures are from the 2006 Tampa, Florida Roadshow Class of which Todd Helme (RUPES) and Duayne McPeeks, (Poorboys).

Today - 2018

Today I'm the Director of Training for Autogeek and Marine 31. I teach the 3-day Competition Ready Detailing Classes three times a year at Autogeek's Training Center in Stuart, Florida. I also teaches one of the only hands-on boat detailing classes in the United States where students learn all aspects of boat detailing both inside and outside.

Learn from the real deal...

If you are looking to take your skills and knowledge to a higher level and you want to take a class from someone that has bonafide credentials, in other words you want to take a class from the real deal, not someone trying to fake it until they make it... then you want and need to attend one of any of the classes I teach. I've been doing this as long and in most cases longer than anyone still breathing and here's what I know,

And just to note....

More classes in other stated to be announced starting next week.

Here's the deal... if you missed the class at Indy the last time we were there, get signed up fast for one day or both days as both days will sell out.

And even better news - there will NOT be tire testing taking place during our class. (No loud engines racing around the track).

With all the new tools, pads and products that have been introduced in the last year this class is going to be a BLAST!

Re: Autogeek Roadshow Detail Class - June 8th & 9th at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Any chance you're coming back to Wisconsin - home of Lake Country, Mfg - in 2018? Last year's event was sold out and students had a ton of fun.

Re: Autogeek Roadshow Detail Class - June 8th & 9th at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

This is so awesome Mike! I missed last years at Lake Country because I got married. I’m in Madison Wisconsin, I cannot wait to attend this class.

Re: Autogeek Roadshow Detail Class - June 8th & 9th at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

You'll be dragging butt after two intense days of HANDS-ON detailing. At least that was my experience last year. And while the students took a break for lunch, Mike polished out the roof of the Scooby Van - no easy task. The guy doesn't stop...sort of like the Energizer Bunny. Worth every penny in my opinion. I'm in Eau Claire, WI by the way...detailing part-time(seasonal due to old man winter).

Re: Autogeek Roadshow Detail Class - June 8th & 9th at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Excellent! Thank you for the information! I’m really looking forward to this! Mike is legendary, nothing like learning from the best. I’ve read all his books, watched all his videos numerous times. It’s like I already know him!

***Bump***

People been asking me to bring our class on the road for YEARS now...

If this class is in driving range, get signed up early. It cost a lot of money to ship everything out to an offsite location and it also takes a LOT of planning on our part and on the part of our host.

So now is the time to get signed up. There's an incentive to sign-up early and you only have to attend one of the days of the two day classes. You can attend both days, that's up to you.

People been asking and even bugging me to bring our incredible hands-on class to their state for years and now that we're doing it we need people to sign up and sign up early to take advantage of the $100.00 store credit.

I just signed up! Looking forward to seeing/trying the newest detailing tools, and foremost, the proper application of ceramic paint coatings!

If you need a demo vehicle for the class I have a Granite Crystal 2015 Dodge Charger Scat Pack 392. Yes, it's a daily driver NOT a garage queen! As a matter of fact I'm on my third set of summer tires. I still have the GTO, but it is enjoying life as a garage queen.
