If you want to go with a foam cutting pad then "yes". I included this link above... besides showing you to mark your backing plate there is a TON of information that will help you get the pads you want.

Nothing wrong with using the 6.5" Megs yellow foam polishing pad with M105 but there's better options when working on hard clearcoats and that's what I typed-out above in my first reply. It's pretty detailed too.... post your same question to any other forum and gauge the replies you get against this one.

At this time, 7/8" of an inch is as thin as DA foam pads come. There's nothing wrong with this thinness or size. If you click this link, you'll see pictures and measurements.

I cover all of this in my how-to book which is also available on iTunes....

Used LK Orange pad with m105 and the spiderwebs still remain. Would using merenza fg400 help? Or at this point just get a microfiber cutting pad with d300?

R8 clear is extremely hard to my knowledge. I would suggest grabbing some 5.5 inch surbuf pads. This combo with m105 should give you the correction your going after.

Well what you are most likely also seeing are the deeper swirls.

Light upper stuff comes out easy regardless of hardness. Deep stuff takes more work, it's a simple fact.

I know first hand to get really bad paint perfect in the compounding phase, it's not uncommon to take a second pass at the section to chase the deeper marks out.

    I have personally done a few R8's.

I have had great success with Scholls S3 and also Rupes zephir. Both with MF pads and foam cutting pads - 5.5"

I really like harder paint, almost all compounds finish very clear.

When compounding, it's always a fight between paint clarity (finishing - micro marring - gloss) and cutting ability. Audi paint and ceramic clear coats finish very well with aggressive compounds.

I know this is a debatable. But I have found Megs is a dream on domestic makes. Euro products are excellent on euro cars. Try a euro compound!

    Re: Audi r8 hard paint

I believe the R8 has the same clear coat as the Gallardo

I used Meguiar's M100 and a Lake Country Hybrid Wool on my Flex 3401 for compounding and finished it out with Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover on a White LC CCS. A third step with Wolfgand Finishing Glaze showed no noticeable improvement

We also used M100 on a Megs DAMF Cutting pad with a Rupes 21, with similar...but, slower results
