Meguiar's Double Sided 100% Wool Cutting Pad
The Meguiar's Double Sided 100% Wool Cutting Pad offers two useable sides through the use of a center adapter system which ensures balanced, uniform results every time. Use the 8 Inch Meguiar's Double Sided 100% Wool Cutting Pad with your rotary polisher and a Double Sided Pad Rotary Adapter. To switch sides, just spin the buffing pad off the threaded adapter and flip the pad and then re-thread onto the adapter.
Meguiar's Double Sided 100% Wool Cutting Pad features 1.5-inch, four-ply twisted fibers for faster cutting and more complete removal of sanding swirls and severe paint blemishes. The twisted wool fibers are highly absorbent in order to distribute Meguiar's liquid polishes and waxes evenly.
The Meguiar's Double Sided 100% Wool Cutting Pad does not need a backing plate. Instead, the pad attaches to the polisher using the Double Sided Pad Rotary Adapter. The adapter screws into a rigid plate in the center of the pad. This plate is surrounded by a soft edge that prevents marring on contours and curves.
Because the adapter is positioned in the middle of the Meguiar's Double Sided 100% Wool Cutting Pad, vibration and wobbling are eliminated. Operator fatigue is reduced and the results on the paint are more uniform.
On the Autogeek store... note, you must have the adapter in order to use the pad.
Meguiar's Double Sided 100% Wool Cutting Pad
Double-Sided Pad Rotary Adapter
This is an 8" pad but measures 9.5 " across the face of the pad. I've placed a Lake Country Single Sided pad next to it for comparison which is also an 8" pad.
Double sided means that it is a one-piece pad and both sides can be used to buff paint. In these shots below I'm flipping it over to show you both sides are working sides, there is no place to attach a backing plate as the backing plate is internal and this type of pad uses an adapter to attach it to the spindle on a rotary buffer.
The length of the wool yarn is 1.5" long
Here's I've pulled away the wool at the outside edge so you can see the internal backing plate interface in which the twisted wool is attached.
Here's the correct adapter needed to use this type of buffing pad.
Here I've pulled away the wool at the center of the pad to expose the threaded portion of the internal backing plate.
Here I'm threading in the adapter...
In this shot you can see the adapter is attached.
In this shot I've flipped the buffing pad over so you can see the threaded portion of the adapter is short on purpose so no part of the threads poke out past the threaded insert in the backing plate.
After threading the adapter into the double sided buffing pad you can then attach the adapter to the 5/8th spindle on the rotary buffer.
Press the Spindle Lock Button to lock up the gears and enable you to tighten the wool pad till it's snug.
You can also attach the adapter to the spindle on the rotary buffer first and then attach your pad to the adapter.
Caution: If you try to use the double sided wool cutting pad without the adapter you risk harming the paint.
The buffing pad will thread on to the buffer but the back of the buffing pad will be against the body of the buffer.
Also, the spindle, because it's quite a bit longer will stick out where it could possibly come into contact with the paint.
For comparison, here's a shot of the threads on the adapter and the threads on the spindle of the rotary buffer. Note how much shorter the threads on the adapter are.

Re: Meguiars Double Sided 100% Wool Cutting Pad
Cleaning the Meguiar's Double Sided 100% Wool Cutting Pad
The best way to clean or remove built-up compound and polish residue as well as removed paint from a wool cutting pad is to use a pad washer. Currently there are two models of pad washers on the market, the Autogeek System 2000 Pad Washer and the Grit Guard Universal Pad Washer. Bot have unique design features and benefits.
The Lake Country System 2000 Pad Washer
This pad washer works with rotary buffers for cleaning either wool or foam buffing pads. It uses a 9 plastic gears, one of which is also a water pump to inject cleaning solution into the face of the buffing pad to help loosen and remove residues off the pad. Eight other plastic gears act to gently agitate and loosen product as well as fluff the yarn fibers of wool buffing pads.
If you look in the pictures below you'll see a gray colored larger gear separate from the smaller black gears. The holes you see in the gray gear act to bring water to the face of the pad when you place the buffing pad against the gear and bring up the RPM's of the buffer..
The Meguiar's W5000 Double Sided Wool Cutting Pad is a very thick pad and as such there was not enough vertical empty space inside the bucket to wash and then sling out any excess cleaning solution left in the pad. A perusal of the directions that come with the pad washer state you can adjust the legs on the base to increase or decrease the hight of the pad cleaning plate to accommodate different thicknesses in pads.
If you find that your pads are too thick for the factory preset hight, go retrieve the directions out of the wastepaper basket as they will tell you what I'm about to show you.
The legs between the base and the pad cleaning table are adjustable, all you need is s Phillips Screwdriver.
Once you remove the screw on the outside you can then slide the leg up into the slot to a higher level to lower the pad cleaning plate further down into the bucket.
Then replace the assembled unit back into the bucket and press it down firmly till it bottoms out.
It was a little snug going in but an easy task overall.
I did a test fit by placing the face of the buffing pad against the plastic gears and the pad cleaning plate and it looked that once the lid were replaced I would have ample room to lift the buffer up after cleaning to sling out any excess cleaning solution.
Look closely, in the top picture the buffing pas is down lower in the bucket, in the bottom picture the pad is sitting higher.
When you go to put the lid back on, make sure you align the lid with the Gray Water Pump Wheel as the diagram from the directions shows and as I point out in the picture below.
After aligning the lid to the bucket, I flipped it upside down to show you how the housing clamps work to hold the lid to the bucket.
With the lid in place I again checked to see if there is enough vertical clearance to clean the pad and then lift it off the pad cleaning plate to sling out any excess cleaning solution and it looks to be a perfect fit.
The Grit Guard Universal Pad Washer
This pad washer can be used with all types of buffers and polishers both air powered or electric. It works well with both wool pads and foam pads.
Inside are 4 spring loaded water cups and a Grit Guard Insert, (yellow component), and a Grit Guard Extension, (little black component in the middle of yellow Grit Guard Insert).
To clean a pad, simply place the buffing pad into the Grit Guard Pad Washer and close the Splash Guard. Then bring the RPM's up to a slow speed and at the same time, push the face of the buffing pad against the Grit Guard Insert and use a pumping motion to push the Grit Guard Insert against the spring loaded cups and this will activate the spring loaded cups to pump cleaning solution into the face of the buffing pad.

Looks like the 3M wool pads and attachment... Would it be safe to say that the 3M attachment would work?

No. The Adapter the Meguiar's Double Sided Wool Pad uses is threaded. The Adapter the 3M system uses is a quick-release locking system that kind of works like a socket and ratchet.
Hang tight I'll take a picture. Also I'm writing an article on ALL our cutting pads so you'll see the 3M/Edge threads appear in the future. (Takes a while to get all the pictures and create the thread)

You would probably need three Heli coils combined to give you the correct inside and outside diameter. I don't even know if this is possible but any machine shop that deal a lot with re-threading aluminum should be able to tell you.
The above is a joke by the way, you cannot use a large double sided wool pad on a tool with a free floating single bearing assembly.
The large pad size, weight and volume, even if it were connected to a PC spindle would not rotate at all thus rendering the tool and the pad combo useless.
IF you want to use a pad like I show in this article you need to a tool that looks like the tools I show in this article.
