    Classification:Cutting Pad
    Yarn: 100% Twisted Wool
    Pile Length: One inch
    Cut: Very Aggressive
Working Face of Pad Diameter: 7 1/2 inches
    Tool: Rotary Buffer
    Attachment: Hook & Loop Interface
Backing Plate Surface Diameter: 6 inches
Recommended Backing Plate Size: 6 inches

Purpose: Removing deep below surface paint defects. Removing sanding marks after wet-sanding.

Method of Cleaning: Spur or Pad Washer

Lake Country’s Wool Cutting Pad is made of 100% wool twisted into hundreds of individual strands. The tight twisting allows the pad to operate at a consistent level of aggressiveness for longer periods. The pad has a diameter of 7.5 inches but the thick pile gives it an overall diameter of 8 inches. The Wool Cutting Pad is intended for severe swirls, scratches and heavy oxidation.

    Part Number: #41-005

    The working diameter = 7.5"

The Backing Plate Surface Diameter = inches with a little wiggle room

From edge to edge from the back side it 8" in diameter

This is what the twist looks like when a pad states it's a twisted wool pad. You can see groups of yarn fibers are twisted together with other groups of yarn fibers to created a single strand of twisted yarn fibers. This is the most aggressive design of yarn fibers and this makes for the most aggressive design of wool buffing pads.

Pile length for the Lake Country DuroWool 100% Twisted Aggressive Wool Cutting Pad is 1"

The outside edges are trimmed a little so that you don't have excessively long strands of fiber on the outside perimeter of the pad.

Buffing pads that use short length fibers are more aggressive than long length fibers because they won't lay over like a long fiber strand will. In the two pictures below I'm trying to pull on the fibers under my thumb to try to get them to lay flat but it's very difficult to do. The short length AND the dense fill means the fibers can' lay down because they are too stout and there's no wiggle room for they to lay down because they run into the fibers right next to them. It is this stoutness that also creates a very aggressive cutting pad.

Polishing pads on the other hand do not use a twisted yard and the pads are less dense and the yarns are much longer so they will lay-out or flatten out and this reduces their aggressiveness when it comes to cutting paint.

Backing plates come in all different sizes and designs. This is a Lake Country Backing plate with a centering hole in the middle of the face of the working side of the backing plate The hole is so you can insert an alignment dowel to help you align buffing pads onto the backing plate so they are centered and true.

Place the hole in the center of the buffing pad onto the dowel and then slide the buffing pad down the dowel till it attaches to the Velcro interface.

    Then simply remove the dowel.

Just to note, there's no yarns in the center of the pad on purpose as yarns in the center tend to contribute to swirls.

Snug as a bug in rug and ready to place onto a rotary buffer. You can also attach the backing plate onto the rotary buffer first and then attach the pad.

Rotary buffers use a 5/8" diameter spindle with an 11 pitch thread. This is a industry standard so all rotary backing plates with 5/8 Inside Diameter threads will attach to 5/8" Outside Diameter spindles.

Backing plates are attached by spinning the backing plate onto the spindle in a clock direction as you're looking down on the face of the buffing pad and the rotary buffing is laing on it's backside.

Rotary buffers turn in a clockwise direction as you're looking down over the back of them and this acts to make sure the backing plate never loosens. Sometimes the backing plate can become attached very tightly and that's where the "Spindle Lock" comes in hand as you can depress the spindle lock button which will lock up the gears in the head of the buffer and allow you to loosen the pad and backing plate off the rotary buffer.

Backing Plates for the Lake Country 7.5" DuroWool 100% Twisted Aggressive Wool Cutting Pad

All of the below backing plates will fit and work with the 7.5" DuroWool 100% Twisted Wool Cutting Pad.

6 inch Hook & Loop Rotary Flexible Backing Plate
A molded urethane backing plate for excellent flexibility and balance. This material is flexible yet incredibly durable. This plate will last through countless, rigorous uses without falling apart or becoming unbalanced.

Another benefit of urethane is its resistance to heat. The Flexible Backing Plate minimizes the transfer of heat from the motor to the paint to prevent burning. Spontaneous heat build-up is also reduced.

Remove and replace pads easily from the hook & loop surface. The hook & loop is molded into the plate so it will not come off.

The Flexible Backing Plate LC-43-160 measures 6” and is perfect for the Curved Edge 7.5" Foam Pads and 8.5 inch pads. Fits all rotary buffers with 5/8" diameter shaft.

Meguiar's Solo Easy Buff W66 Rotary Backing Plate 6 Inch
Meguiars Solo Easy Buff W66 Rotary Backing Plate 6 Inch is a soft, cushioned backing plate that offers flexibility and excellent performance on curved panels.

The "Easy Buff" Rotary Backing Plate is technology borrowed from Meguiar’s OEM Polishing System used at the car factories. As an alternative to a hard backing plate, this cushioned backing plate distributes pressure for smoother buffing and minimizing swirls. The combination of this backing plate, the specially engineered buffing pads, and the Cut & Polish Cream all work synergistically to produce swirl-free, world class results.

Meguiar's Solo Easy Buff W66 Rotary 6 Inch Backing Plate has a thick layer of foam between the Velcro® brand fasteners and the hard plastic base. This foam provides flexibility and disperses pressure across the whole pad to avoid cookie-cutting and holograms. Plus, the backing plate is less likely to mar the paint if it should accidentally bump the vehicle.

Meguiar's Solo Easy Buff W66 Rotary 6 Inch Backing Plate can be used with any rotary polisher with a 5/8” -11 spindle threaded shaft.

Meguiar's Rotary Buffer W-65 Backing Plate, 6 Inches
Meguiars Rotary Buffer W-65 Backing Plate is built for long-term performance and effortless balancing. One piece molded construction is ultra durable. Velcro® brand hook and loop fasteners provide secure hold on the pad during operation.

You can use this backing plate with any rotary polisher with a 5/8 -11 spindle threaded shaft

Cleaning the Lake Country 7.5 inch DuroWool 100% Twisted Aggressive Wool Cutting Pad

The best way to clean or remove built-up compound and polish residue as well as removed paint from a wool cutting pad is to use a pad washer. Currently there are two models of pad washers on the market, the Autogeek System 2000 Pad Washer and the Grit Guard Universal Pad Washer. Bot have unique design features and benefits.

The Lake Country System 2000 Pad Washer
This pad washer works with rotary buffers for cleaning either wool or foam buffing pads. It uses a 9 plastic gears, one of which drives a water pump to infect cleaning solution into the face of any buffing pad to help loosen and remove residues off the pad. Eight other plastic gears act to gently agitate and loosen product as well as fluff the yarn fibers of wool buffing pads.

If you look in the pictures below you'll see a gray colored larger gear separate from the smaller black gears. This gray gear drives a water pump which pumps cleaning solution up and into the wool pad when the buffer RPM's are revved up as it is the buffing pad rotating in the pad washer that drives the gear.

To clean a wool buffing pad simply place the face of the buffing pad inside the pad washer and against the plastic gears. Next close the splash guards and then bring the buffer up to a slow RPM. As you run the buffer, slowly move the buffer in a small clockwise motion to insure all areas of the face of the buffing pad are cleaned well.

After a few minutes lift the buff up so the face of the buffing pad is no longer in contact with the gears and bring the RPM's up to zing out any excess water and cleaning solution.

The Grit Guard Universal Pad Washer
This pad washer can be used with all types of buffers and polishers both air powered or electric. It works well with both wool pads and foam pads.

Inside are 4 spring loaded water cups and a Grit Guard Insert, (yellow component), and a Grit Guard Extension, (little black component in the middle of yellow Grit Guard Insert).

To clean a pad, simply place the buffing pad into the Grit Guard Pad Washer and close the Splash Guard. Then bring the RPM's up to a slow speed and at the same time, push the face of the buffing pad against the Grit Guard Insert and use a pumping motion to push the Grit Guard Insert against the spring loaded cups and this will activate the spring loaded cups to pump cleaning solution into the face of the buffing pad.

Then after a few minutes, lift the polisher up and bring the RPM's up to zing out any excess water.

    Hi Eric,

Good talking to you on the phone, looks like as we discussed there are two ways to measure the diameter of a buffing pad,

    1. Backing Plate Surface Diameter
    2. Face of pad diameter

Our store pages calls the 41-005 a 7.5 inch pad and it measures that way across the face of the pad and the backing plate surface diameter measures at about 6" to 6 1/4"

There's some wiggle room with both ways of measuring.

The goal here is to create a database of information on the different buffing pads we offer so a person can choose the best pad for their project, (type and size for buffing on paint), and then match the right backing plate for the pad.

So maybe I'll just create a listing with both measurements? Front pad diameter and back of pad diameter.

That way everyone will have as much information as possible when gathering information. The forum world is kind of detail oriented so this should satisfy everyone's quest for knowledge.

Are the Meguiar's W65 and the W68 backing plates the same diameter? I just wondered because your above article links to the W65 backing plate but shows pictures of the W68 backing plate.

    Just curious, thanks

I currently have the new style black W64 for my rotary, but will probably be getting the W68 or W65 for larger pads in the future, just not sure which one yet.
