Disk sizes
Hey guys,
I am completelly puzzled and am trying to find a solution to the following problem:
I just watched a video with Chip Foose where he shows the new Trizac system using 1500, 3000 and 5000 grit sanding disks to flatten paint. The nice thing about this is that after the 5000 grit sanding, the paint doesn't need to be compounded, you can go directly to polishing!
So I tried to find some of those disks but they only come in 6" sizes. Both my DA sander (pneumatic) and my electrical sander are 5". So the disks are too big.
I searched Autogeek store for the Meguiar's equivalent (Unigrit) and it's the same thing: 6 inches disks... ;(
Does anyone know if there is some kind of interface that can be purchased to use 6" sanding disks on 5" backplates?
How about using those on a Polisher DA like the Meguiar's G110 V2? I think the original backplate is 6", I replaced mine with a 3" but still have the original one somewhere...
Finally, I have 5" sanding disks for lower grit sizes (40 to 320) but some are sticky and some are Hook and loop. Any interface exist to put sticky ones on hook and loop system?

Can't you just use a bigger backing plate?

Re: Disk sizes
Just pick up a 6" backing plate, I got mine from a local auto body supplier. I used the Trizac system and it does a good job but I still would compound first before polishing.

Re: Disk sizes
I did not think about asking for backing plates at the autobody supply stores. I was asking for interface pads and sanding disks.
My sander doesn't use the same type of backing plates as a DA or Rotary. The plate is attached to the machine by 6 screws that go through holes in the backplate. So I don't think it's something that can be replaced.
Autogeek seems to have a pad made by Meguiars that would do the job. The problem is finding the sanding disks... I went to all the Autobody and paint stores in town and none carry them ;(
Autogeek sells Meguiars unigrit that seems like a good product but you have to buy the disks in boxes. That would last me for 2 lifetimes... ;(
Probably will have to stick to hand sanding, that's too bad because those Trizac disks are totally awesome!

It's probably for a DA right? I think I have one around somewhere that came with my Meguiars G110V2 DA. If I can find the disks maybe I could try the DA and see how it does at sanding... I don't think it's designed to do that, from what I understand you need more rotation and less orbiting when you want to sand. But I may be wrong.
