Need Advice - Grey looking paint when it should be black

    Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum and would greatly appreciate some advice. I was doing some 1200 grit wet sanding on my gloss black alloys to smooth out some old touch up paint and noticed that the black paint turned a cloudy grey which i know is normal from wet sanding. I then used some rubbing compound to remove the scratches left behind but there are still grey patches which I can’t remove and just gets worse the more I use compound on it. Please see the attached photo.

I thought initially that the reason why it turned grey is because it could of been old touch up paint which wore very thin from wet sanding but this doesn’t seem to the the case as the grey patches just get bigger. If anybody can please shed some light on this I would be most grateful!

    Thanks

    Reece

    First...

    Welcome to AutogeekOnline!

Second - from the picture, I still can't make out the issue?

The big picture is this, you might end up simply re-painting the entire wheel to get it to look uniform.

    Hi Mike,

    Thanks very much!

The issue is the grey looking paint within the red circle. It should be black colour and gets worse when using rubbing compound. Any ideas why the paint has turned grey?

Do you see black coming off the wheel and onto your cloth?

When you abrade clearcoat - you make it grey.

If you're pulling color, maybe you've buffed through the black layer and are now working on primer?

Hard to say without being there. That's why I wrote about the BIG PICTURE. It could be that you're past the point of no return with the finish on this wheel and at this point - it's time to rattle can it.
