Wet Sanding & Buffing Fresh Clear Coat

New to paint finish work (Obviously!)
Had a fender repainted with PPG Deltron 2000 base and PPG Shop-Line JC630 clear coat.

Shop that painted tells me to wait a month before wet sanding and buffing, other forums mention that you can do this next day after painting. Just don't wax or seal for a month as the paint is still gassing off. Im planning on wet sanding with 3000 grit then buffing with Meguires compound and finishing up with Meguires polishing coumponnd. Finally applying a sealer a month later.Any suggestions ?

Why the need for wet sanding on a body shops freshly done work? Take it back to whoever painted it. Sanding sould have been done before it left. You'll play hell trying to cut and buff clear thats fully cured. Most places will buff as soon as 2 hours after. Most of the time its next day if needed.

In terms of gassing off, yes, fresh paint will need a min. of 30 days. Doesn't mean you can't polish or seal it, just select silicon free products. HD505 is a great polish for fresh paint. Basically new paint safe version of HDSpeed.

The shop is trying to cover their butt because they don't trust "people" do know what they heck they are doing when it comes to sanding and buffing fresh paint. You're simply in that group called "people". Probably nothing personal on their side towards you.

By asking you to wait, they know the paint will "shift" that is fully dry and set-up. Thus nothing can be blamed on the paint side. If you buff too soon, before the paint fully shifts, then the problem is still on your side but they may get part of the blame.

The above is why they told you what they told you.

As long as they sprayed enough clear knowing you were going to sand I say go for it.

I just taught a group of 16 guys how to,

    Hand sand
    Machine sand
    Use a rotary buffer
    Use an orbital buffer

On two cars, a 1957 Ford Thunderbird and a 1965 Pontiac GTO and I must say both cars came out AMAZING!

Next time you see one of my Roadshow Car Detailing Classes in your area, sign-up. My classes are 100% HANDS-ON and I cover how to sand and buff.

    Also....

I'm assuming you're going to "hand sand"?

    You didn't say?

There's #3000 sanding discs for sanding by machine and their are #3000 sanding papers for hand sanding.

If hand sanding, I'd look into #2500 Nikken Finishing Papers, we carry them on the AG store. #3000 is like sanding with a sheet of printer paper. At least #2500 will actually do some texture leveling with a medium foam rubber backing pad.

    Thanks Mike
I'm close to the warehouse in Stuart and picked up some 3000 along with some rubbing compound . Wet sanded , compounded and polished by hand (yesterday) as its a small fender. Took me a little longer than a machine buff but turned out fine.

    Good to hear.

Next time you're here with the car let the folks in the lobby know you want to see me and I'm happy to take a look.

    What are you working on?
