Re: Aluminum Polishing Class - Removing Holograms! - Saturday - Dec 15th
Continued...
NOTE: This class starts at 1:00pm on Saturday, December 15th. Don't show up here first thing in the morning unless you're also taking the "CD in a Day" class for the IDA
More info on taking the IDA Certified Detailer Tests here,

Wow!
Kind of surprised no comments?
I though some of you would have thought this was a cool project? At least "different".

979 miles as the crow flies keeps me from joining these cool events. Aluminum is the ultimate feel good ....before and after jobs!

Sorry I'm late to the party! I thought those trucks were Grumman Flxible, but I looked it up and Grumman only owned them for 5 years and they made buses...so I guess they were Grumman Olson. I know I remember seeing the Grumman name on lots of trucks, which I guess makes sense because they made a lot of UPS trucks and mail trucks...I'm thinking maybe FedEx too. That one you've got is a little one, I remember them all having noses on them, instead of that flat front end. Any idea what year it is, Mike?

I watched a video on metal polishing a few years ago and I told myself: "I will never, ever, do this kind of work" Had 2 calls to polish aluminium wheels in 5 years and turned them both down

Good or bad.... I've polished a lot of aluminum in my life. Not like Joe Fernandez, but a tick smaller scale.

I don't know much about the model of this truck or the history but by the time we're through, or "I'm" through I share what I know.

Have to agree with you. In most cases, polishing aluminum is simple hard, dirty work and for most people, the work isn't worth the money.
Me? I like a challenge. This truck will be a challenge. The Pontoon boat in the pictures above was a challenge.
The way I think about these project is like this,
I only schedule project that I'm willing to do 100% by myself. Then if no one joins in, that's okay because I had already planned on doing the job by myself. If any locals join in then the more hands make a project like this go by fast.
I kind of figured there would be some people that would like to learn the art of polishing aluminum? We'll be sending out a newsletter to our local car guys and I'm sure I'll have a few people show up.
I also wanted to have a cool project here for anyone taking the "CD in a Day" test to become an IDA Certified Detailer. Just trying to share the fun...
Until I see the Van and do some testing I don't know what the process will be yet. Worst case scenario it will be machine sanded with Mirka Abralon, probably #3000 or #4000 grit. Best case scenario we'll use orbital polishers with foam cutting pads and a metal polish to remove the holograms and polish to a mirror finish.
One thing for sure, in the almost 10 years I've been here at Autogeek, this is the only forum that comes up with projects like these and then opens participation up to the public. Don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing but it's something.
