HD DVD Officially Dead --- Toshiba offers Sony the Win !

Toshiba officially tossed in the towel this morning and closed the door on HD DVD. After Target, BB, and even Netflix helped to place the final nails in the coffin, it appears two movie studio's also had a change of heart and thus lead Toshiba into securing Sony as the winner in this format war.

I would suggest that those who want an upconverting dvd player, consider the Toshiba machines. Each make most discs almost HD quality and certainly better than standard dvd. Best Buy is rumored to be offering the A3 starting tomorrow for 79.99 clearance in store. With several hundred pure digital titles likely selling for peanuts shortly, it could be a way to pickup some must have's cheap too and flex your Home Theatre muscle for little $$.

I find it hardly likely Sony will drop price of Blu-ray shortly, since it now owns the market and can recoup from Toshiba's past pricing discounts. My hope is the movies will drop and become a real competitor to dvd. Seeing Pirates of the Caribbean on Blu-ray is an experience not to be missed.

Sony will keep the price of the Blu-Ray player as high as they can for as long as they can.

Kinda sad, as I have HD DVD (A2), but it was only a matter of time. Like you said Killr, the players do in fact do an awesome job upconverting SD titles, and the HD DVD movies will become awfully cheap. I'll keep it around until Blu-Ray prices drop, which won't be anytime soon. I'm still happy with the player as a whole, so I'm not all that disappointed.

Sony out marketed Toshiba unlike the beta -VHS loss for Sony.

I'm pretty sure that PS3's will continue to drop in price. They have a gaming market to compete in as well. The PS3 is also *upgradeable* and is 2.0 ready.

problem with PS3 is its initial cost outlay is still over 400.00 loss per unit. While they can/will make it up on software and movies, it will likely still stay at the higher video game spectrum.

The cost to deliver a PS3 is and has been down to ~$400 for a few months. It's still a KILLER solution to HD/multimedia at this point and it doesn't have a rival in this arena anywhere close to the price. You get lots for the money. It's also one of the best SD DVD upscaling units.
