Grit Guard - Their Story

Grit Guard, Inc. was started by Doug Lamb, the inventor of the Grit Guard® Insert, a product that fits in the bottom of any 3.5, 4, 5, 6, and 7 gallon bucket, and acts as a settling filter, to prevent dirt and grit from contaminating wash mitts and brushes while washing vehicles.
Always a "car guy", Doug and his brother rebuilt a 1930 Model A with a Hemi engine when they were 16 and 17 years old. For a number of years they raced their "baby" and learned all about the inner workings of their car's engine. Actually, the whole Lamb family are car people! They still have Doug's family's 1963 Studebaker Avanti, the same car they used to take family road trips in!

Doug hated washing his red car, because it seemed like every time he washed it, it marred the paint, leaving unsightly swirl marks, scratches, and spider webbing in the vehicles bright red finish. And you can't drive (or at least, he wouldn't!) drive a dirty sports car. Doug went to the drawing board, devising a prototype that fit in the bottom of a bucket, separating the grit and grime from the wash mitt. The idea of the Grit Guard was born.

Grit Guard was started, literally, right after the 9/11 attacks. Doug had been in business for over 30 in the packaging industy before selling his company and retiring. As Doug and his wife Luan watched in horror as the towers came down, Doug told her he was going to invent a product to create jobs right here in America. He had been thinking about his idea of the Grit Guard for a while and decided now was the time to put it into action.

By November of 2001, Doug had prototypes of his future Grit Guard, a patent attorney, and the name Grit Guard was established. The famous proverb, "Necessity is the mother of invention" could not have been more apt in this scenario! Grit Guards early motto was "A product from the USA, made in the USA."

On May 2nd, 2002 Grit Guards started coming off the assembly line! Prior to the invention of the Grit Guard, cars had been washed out of a 5 gallon bucket since the invention of the Automobile. Doug's vision set out to create not just the Grit Guard® but a Bucket dolly, Heavy duty Bucket, Lid, and Seat cushion. He put the whole package together and the Grit Guard Washing System was born.
