1st place! Thanks to Mike Phillips & AGO members
I first visited this forum back in 2009, looking for info on revitalizing the tired OEM lacquer on my '87 El Camino. It was about the time Mike had penned his article on restoring single-stage metallic paint using Meguiar's M07.
I've become a disciple of his process and in combination with the sound advice in technique, product selection and samples from the helpful AGO staff and members, I've gathered up enough nerve to enter the old girl in a yearly judged All-Chevy show at a local dealer.
Competing against Chevy trucks from the 1940's to 2013, many with frame-off restos I didn't think I'd stand a chance. The original lacquer on my "survivor" has about every old paint defect known to man: lacquer checking, crazing, road rash, even a rust spot. But as they say, the devil's in the details, so I attended to every visible square inch with the knowledge and skills I've learned here to help make up some points.
The result---a very unexpected 1st place trophy!
Products used:
3 hand rubs with Meg's M07, allowing each one an overnight soak
Machine polish with Meg's M80, followed by Poorboy's Black Hole
Sealed with Collinite 915 and topped with Fusion (thanks, Roshan!)
All brightwork done with Collinite Metal Wax
Interior and Underhood plastic, vinyl and rubber surfaces done with Meg's Natural Shine
Tires and exterior rubber dressed with PERL 1:1
Show day wipedown with Optimum Detailer
Thanks again to Mike, the AGO staff and members. I've won a few trophies before, but none was more gratifying than today's (and none were more upsetting to my competitors with frame-off restorations who finished behind me)
