    1986 Porsche 930

Today's Show-n-Shine subject is a 1986 Porsche 930 (911 Turbo). I usually only see the right side of this car as it is passing me on the track. The rest of track day is spent looking at it's rear end. It is stupid fast.

The paint is all original, 1986 single stage guards red. The car has never been machine polished nor clayed. My initial inspection showed paint that was dull, lifeless and all around tired. Paint was missing in some areas and very, very thin all over.

The goal of this job was not to create a pristine finish. After my initial exfoliation of dead paint, a ton of RIDS were present. As much as it pained me, I just could not risk removing them. The paint was far too thin. But, gloss was certainly restored and a little life put back into her.

As it arrived at the Art of Shine Super Fantastic Shine Mahal (my garage):

Missing paint and the white shows just how thin the paint is. These areas were avoided as to not impart any addtional damage.

You can see just how dull the paint is.

    Getting taped up:

Forgive my garage clutter! It never looks this bad.

This is not a red wax pad. This is my LC white after one pass for a test section. Gotta love single stage paint:

Not the best 50/50. It is hard to hold my Infratech light and manually focus a camera at the same time. These results were from the Flex 3401, orange LC pad and Menzerna SIP:

    Now we are getting somewhere:

And now some afters. The final LSP was the Blackfire Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection topped with Blackfire Midnight Sun Ivory Carnuba:

    Products used:

    CG Citrus Wash
    Iron X Soap Gel
    P21S TAW
    Wolfgang Clay/Clay Lube
    Menzerna Super Intensive Polish
    Menzerna Super Finish Nano
Blackfire Wet Diamond All Finish Paint Protection
    Blackfire Midnight Sun Ivory Carnuba
    Infratech Color Matching Light
    Flex 3401
    LC Orange/White/Black CCS Pads
    A gazillion MF towels
Purple Metal Polish for wheels and exhaust tips
    Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant
    303 Aerospace Protectant

I'd say you did a real respectable job on her, Ed. Very nice. The good news about being stupid fast is no road rash to repair. At least now you have a shiny car to admire at the track.

Did you at least take the opportunity to put in some strategically located lead weights?? Too bad the CG or sheriff doesn't use any depleted uranium....

Three things that always go together in this world:

    1. Red
    2. Porsche
    3. Turbo

SWEET car and nice work on it. It really really pops in the after pics. I bet the owner was super happy!

    Make that four things:

    1. Red
    2. Porsche
    3. Turbo
    4. Chrome deep dish 5-spoke wheels

    Really drool worthy.

Why is the paint so thin in those spots?

You did a great job on it. It looks 100 times better

I am not sure why the paint was so compromised. 26 years of hand rubbing, modificaitons, time in shops...adds up to alot of abuse. It was a lesson in patience and constant checking and rechecking as I went along. I really wish I could have gotten it better but it wasn't meant to be.

    Great work!!! Love those cars!

Given the burn on the edge of the hood I would assume it been machine polished before though, at least some point in its life....
