2020 C8 Corvette Detail by Mike Phillips


Here's the 2nd black 2008 C8 Corvette I detailed in 2020. This car had 91 miles on it when it arrived to Autogeek. It was covered in Type II Water Spots - Imprint Rings. There were also a number of other paint defects that I'll share later.

The paint on the black versions of this car is SOFT. I wouldn't call it super soft but it's definitely the opposite of hard. I corrected all of the defects and later removed sanding marks using only Dr. Beasley's NSP 45 and a RUPES white foam finishing pad on the CBEAST.

I chemically stripped the paint using IGL Precoat and then installed one application of BLACKFIRE BLACK EDITION. Flash time before wipe-off was about 30 to 45 seconds.

I polished the glass using the same products used on the paint then sealed the glass with PBL Surface Coating. The leather interior was sealed using PBL Leather & Vinyl Coating.

There's a video on my Facebook page somewhere - in it I talk about what a pain these cars are to machine correct and polish simply because there's not a single large flat panel on them. The body panels are all made-up from multiple, multiple planes. Not a big deal but they do take more technique when running the polisher. Basically you make linear passes instead of crosshatch passes.

Question:

You chemically stripped the paint after using NSP 45. Do you feel that the SiO2 primer coat it leaves after polishing survived the chemical stripping before coating it with Black Fire?

I’m trying to adjust my process with the NSP line, as I have all of it. Thanks!
