    A Special Treat: 1970 Olds Cutlass S

This car was a treat for me to do for several reasons. The first and most obvious is that it was very cool to work on a classic car. Secondly, this belongs to a good friend who's owned it for years. He finally got it painted this year about a month before he had me coat it. The paint left a lot to be desired...more on that later. I took my 11 year old daughter when I went to pick it up...she couldn't figure out the crank windows!! Here it was to begin with:

Another thing this generation wouldn't get...

The black decals were scratched quite badly. I'm assuming they were new? Whoever washed it destroyed them...i'm thinking the body shop did, but I don't know.

Here's where that bird poop from the earlier shot had already stained the clear!

One of the first things to improve was the wheels. Here is one after being hand polished by Duragloss Squeaky Clean:

The hood had the dubious honour of having the worst paint. Look at the dirt and how it was amplified after polishing.

I had only planned on doing a one step polish because I thought it would have been a good paint job. It wasn't, by any stretch of the imagination, and I ended up spending an additional 10 hours just to get it to a decent stage. Not perfect, just decent. 13 hours total on the paint. The paint was coated with Self Heal Lite and topped with Top Coat and the wheels coated with Wheel & Caliper. I might have been able to improve it a bit I think...

Thanks for looking. My friend was absolutely blown away by the transformation. Proud moment.

Great work and write up and pictures!

That's so sad when you put $ in to make it awesome looking with a new paint and the work is not well done. It's either the paint it self or it could be it's a to thin of a layer with the base coat color. That seems to not getting the depth in the color. Your work did it look as good as possible though. And awesome your friend is happy and satisfied. That is all that counts.

Brings back fond memories of my '72 Cutlass Supreme Coupe. All things considered I'd say you did an outstanding above and beyond the call job.

    Awesome work Richy!

A 1970 Rallye 350 was my first Oldsmobile. Still have it.

Damn I wish your pictures would load all the time. 1970-1972 were some of the best years for the mid size GM coupes. Chevelle, Skylark, Cutlass, LeMans, etc. Knowing your work I'm sure it looked incredible when you got done.

Nice save my friend. Bet it was a great ride with your little girl.
About a month ago my friend pulled his Cutlass out and we went on a de-stress cruise. lol

Great work on a very cool Oldsmobile! The Rallye 350 was much more unique than a standard Cutlass S. I think 3,547 was magic number of how many rolled off the assembly line in 1970, so they are a pretty rare ride. The special order Sebring Yellow paint and urethaned bumpers really differentiated it from the run of the mill. It also came with the W-25 hood and rear exhaust cutouts, like what you would see on a 442. (The hood was actually an option for the 442, but they all came with the cutout rear bumper). Performance came from the Olds 350, rated at 310 hp.

Always nice to see some Olds love! Again, great work!

    What a job, Rich!!

I got a great laugh out of your daughter and the crank windows!! Also, the Kiss Alive II 8 track. I most definitely owned that on 8 Track myself.
It is no coincidence that man's best friend cannot talk.
