Might just be bad luck. I have the first one you mentioned with the MTM kit. Bought as a refurb on eBay for like 75 bucks 2 years ago. Used weekly and still going strong

You can get pretty much the same setup straight from mtm hydro site. They just updated all their kits. I just picked one up and it’s excellent.
