Rupes Mini And The Missing Anti-Spin Shroud

This has been nagging at me since I got the Mini.

First thing I noticed is that the infamous Anti-Spin shroud is absent from this tool. Is backplate speed limited by the smaller diameter of the back plate, or some other factor?

That tool rips through defects very quickly. I can't help but wonder if the missing shroud is a factor.

Maximum backing plate speed isn’t dictated by the shroud especially when the pad is on the paint surface. The shroud is a safety mechanism for inexperienced users who lift the polisher off the paint surface while its powered on. The reason why the Mini has ridiculous correction is with its ability to rotate so well as the mass and size of the pad is basically half that of a regular DA coupled to the fact that it slingshots 12mm across the paint. Oh and theres the little thing about the polishing action being concentrated over a small 3-4” surface making correction phenomenal.

Over the summer, I attended a Rupes training class, with Todd, Dylan, and Chip.

I posed this question to Todd, and Chip. Their response was that it was the overall size of the tool. Simply, it was too small.

I would imagine it has something to do with the pad size as well. 3" machines in general are easier to stall because the pressure is distributed over a smaller footprint. You wouldn't want to slow rotation to begin with, then any pressure would completely stop it.
