Technically the one on the left would be OLD OLD - that was original OEM equipment on tools manufactured before July 2014. After that they featured a more oblong pin engagement like is pictured on the right, but with the blue ring. The one on the right would be the very latest generation that comes as standard on the Mark II tools. Oblong pin and gray back.

Would there be any useful purchase to upgrade your old backing plate to the new version? Basically, what improvements did Rupes make in their new backing plate?

I believe they changed the hook and loop to have more Radial strength while decreasing the tear strength . Basically stronger for the stresses the machine puts on the pads and easier to remove pad

    Correct.

The stock plate for the Mark II tools maintains all the lateral engagement strength of the previous generation, but reduces the sheer (peel) strength so the pads aren't so hard to remove as they were on the ES tool standard plates.

Backing plates from my MKI will NOT fit my MKII.

Can I purchase a 5" plate for my MKII LHR 21?

Yes. The current Rupes backing plates for sale are meant to fit the MkII. It will also fit the ES legacy tools since they now have the same mounting points as the MkII. It will also fit the old mounting style of the first batch of the ES legacy tools, like Todd@Rupes mentioned.

    Re: Mark II 15

The only plates that do not fit ALL tools are those manufactured and included on tools prior to July 2014. Everything after that date will fit all tools, ES or Mark II, blue or gray ring.

The plates are available from Autogeek and most of our distributors in the US.
