Defective Dewalt DWP849x?
When I set my Dewalt rotary to a specific speed, fully depressing the trigger will cause the buffer to exceed that set speed, and then slowly creep down to the specified speed. For example, the speed is set at 1200rpm, I press the trigger and the Dewalt will ramp up to 1600 and then creep down to 1200. Is this at all normal?
Secondly, when going on and off the trigger, and then quickly back on the trigger, the buffer seems to over-torque itself which seems to negate the slow start function. It's quite a jerking motion that is not indicative of a smooth operation. I'm comparing this buffer to my previous Makita. The Dewalt has the ergonomics that I really like, but these two problems did not exist on the 9227c. Is this just something I have to live with, or should I start looking into a replacement 849x?
Thanks in advance for your help and input.

from what i remember reading, the buffer was designed that way with the weird speed thing

My 849X does the exact same thing.
If your going to look into a repacement, go with the PE14. You will be glad you did.

Mine is the same way as well. If you squeeze the trigger slowly the speed will not over rev like that.

Rupes polishers do this too, at least my lhr15 does. Love my dewalt, this is a non-issue for me.

Thanks guys, it's not a terrible problem, not enough to make me sell it, it's just a bit of a nuisance that would otherwise make this a perfect rotary in my book. I tracked down a video review Mike Phillips did reviewing four different rotaries and his 849x had the same speed revving mechanism.

I noticed when I try to do a manual soft start, sometimes beginning slow like this would allow it to soft start but then fully depressing the trigger after this point would cause it to over-torque, which is the second issue I listed. I would have gone with the Flex Pe-14, but I was able to get this 849x for less than half the price of the Flex.
Thanks for your help guys, now I know this is how it's designed and it's not a defective unit.

That is the way mine is. Once you get used to it it won't be a problem. I wanted to buy the flex because I love my 3401 but bought a new 849x on amazon for 156 shipped for a fathers day special dewalt was doing. I could not pass up that kind of deal. I bought it primarily for boats. Now I just need to figure out what pads to buy for the dewalt.
