Does anyone still use a Dewalt rotary???
Hey guys. Just a quick thought- does anyone still use a Dewalt Rotary or does everyone own a Flex now??? Reason behind the question- It was time to retire my old rotary and I just picked up a Dewalt that looks brand new for $40 from a guy that tried to buff his own car with wool pad and burned the paint up. He said he never wanted to see a buffer again. I couldn't pass that deal up but was really wanting to save up for a Flex and still might. Any Dewalt fans out there??

Man, for $40 I'd say you got a steal!
I have a Flex PE14 and it is hands down the nicest rotary Ive used/owned. I sold my Dewalt 849X for a Makita 9237c, and then later sold the Makita and now have a Flex. IMO Dewalt<Makita<Flex
The Dewalt will last a good while. In time, if you decide to retire it and/or upgrade, the Flex is also a great tool- very comfortable. For the time being, I would suggest grab some quality pads and polishes and put that tool to use! That money saved can go straight into you pocket or back into your business!
Best of luck!

For 40 bucks you can't beat that price. That Dewalt will probably out live you, but as the previous poster said, the PE14 is the smoothest rotary (weight/noise) out there.

The Dewalt and Makita are full sized rotaries designed or geared more toward the bodyshop environment. The PE14 is a compact rotary more inclined to Detailing type work.

That's a great deal. I purchased a Dewalt rotary when I was doing a coop on high school at a local GM dealership. Learned a tonne but also made me stay in Univeristy for 3 years after lol. I still break mine out for friends boats etc. Current toy for me being a hobbiest is the Flex 3401 use that for everything, just recently used it to buff out maple stairs I did in my house.

The 849x is my personal go to machine. I’m very fond of mine and have a ton of of miles on it. While I still use other rotary machines, this is my fave.

Wow for $40 thats an amazing deal. I am about to buy a new rotary and its either makita or dewalt, well flex way out of budget for now. Man I wish I could have come across such deal.

Flex was out of my budget as well and could not pass up this opportunity to own a nice Dewalt. The guy that I bought it from, used it once and gave me 2 wool pads with it. One new and the other pad trashed. The used one looked like he buffed rubber or something. The pad was stiff as a board and unusable. I felt bad for the guy for destroying his paint and his pad and having such a bad experience with buffing but was very glad he was ready to "nearly give his buffer away".
That made me think back in 1998 when I first learned how to use a rotary. A really good friend at the Ford body shop taught me how to use a rotary and all of the do's and dont's. I was very fortunate that I didnt have the same experience as the guy that sold me this buffer had. Thanks for hands on training. Now days, thanks for forums like this one and others for allowing all of us the opportunity to educate ourselves and learn from others mistakes, so we don't have extremely bad experiences, but even if we do, we will know how to handle them or correct them properly.
I still haven't gotten to use the Dewalt rotary yet, but am still exited to use it. All the jobs that I have done since I purchased the Dewalt, I have only needed to use my Griots Orbital.

I own one but I pretty much never use it. My Bigfoot 21 always gets the job done so I never find a reason to bust out the Dewalt. It's a nice machine though. Automatic speed control and well balanced. I like the fact the RPM number is on the dial, so you know exactly what you are doing. For the price you paid, it's one heck of a deal, especially for a machine that has only been used once.
