Product Comparison: Griot's Garage 6in and Porter Cable 7424xp

I think this thread will be beneficial to newbies looking to buy a polisher kit from autogeek , and often always ask , "which polisher should I buy? And why ? What are the differences"

So here it is the famous Porter cable 7424xp
    Attachment 41395

And here is the beloved griots garage 6 inch

    Attachment 41396

    Let's start with some specs.

And see who wins in the power department

    Porter cable 7424xp
Motor size :4.5 amp 500 watt
    OPMS (orbits per minute) 2500-6800

    Griot's Garage 6 inch
    Motor size: 7amp 850 watt
    OPMS (orbits per minute) 2500-6800

It's obvious we have a winner in power on the Griots Garage 6 inch.

Now if your a newbie and intimidated by more power and leaning towards the Porter cable for its safety , please be assured that the Griots Garage 6 inch is just as safe.

(It's also nice when you get better and more experienced at polishing to have that extra power when you need it)

This is everything your going to get with your 7424xp.

    polishing attachment
    Wrench
    Handle attachment
    Instructions

These are on the side of the polisher you can either put the handle to the left or right

The handle is a little odd to me, I feel they made it too long , if they made it a little bit closer to the head maybe I would like it better.

But it is better to keep your hand on top of the polisher for even pressure anyway especially if your a newbie

Now let's take a look at the Griots Garage 6 inch

Product Comparison: Griot's Garage 6in and Porter Cable 7424xp-1456480061039-jpg
This is what you're going to get with your gg6

    6 inch backing plate
    Wrench
Allen key to adjust the handle to liking
    Extra brushes
    Instructions

The instructions are EXCELLENT info for a newbie (I know it's just directions) but a newbie can actually learn alot from reading it. It has alot of useful information

Thumps up for griots on that

Product Comparison: Griot's Garage 6in and Porter Cable 7424xp-1456480256990-jpg
There's back of the box , I like that they made some graphics explaining the defect and paint animation it is very important when doing anything to understand what you are doing and the nature of the beast.

The handle is removable and adjustable, I am not a fan of handles however this handle is much more user friendly and more comfortable.

Those are the bolts you can loosen to adjust the handle to your position liking, or remove it completely.

Now let's do a side by side comparison

Product Comparison: Griot's Garage 6in and Porter Cable 7424xp-1456480687399-jpg

Product Comparison: Griot's Garage 6in and Porter Cable 7424xp-1456480724951-jpg

The griots garage 6 inch is a tad heavier
The Porter cable is 5 and a half lbs.
I couldn't find the weight for the gg6 but my guess is 6 lbs maybe.

The griots garage chassis is a little longer as well but they both feel comfortable in the hands.

Product Comparison: Griot's Garage 6in and Porter Cable 7424xp-1456480810977-jpg
This is the Porter cable switch easy on easy off, it's a breeze to put on and off and the Porter cable clearly wins this battle.

Product Comparison: Griot's Garage 6in and Porter Cable 7424xp-1456480822546-jpg
One of the things I do dislike about this machine is the awkward on and off switch it is angled weird and on the tougher side to put it on.

Product Comparison: Griot's Garage 6in and Porter Cable 7424xp-1456481052359-jpg
Speed dial for the gg6 goes to 1-6
The speed dial goes to the left.

Product Comparison: Griot's Garage 6in and Porter Cable 7424xp-1456481106467-jpg
Porter cable speed dial goes to 1-6
This speed dial goes to the right.

There is no winner or loser of the speed dial there almost identical besides direction.

Either machine is a great choice.

And whatever one you choose, can and will make your paint shiny.

Autogeek offers excellent starter kits, that can not only save you money but make your life easy.

So the moment of truth which one should you go with ?

If I had to choose it would be the griots garage 6 inch.

Why ? The answer is power.

The Porter cable is a great newbie machine, (not to mention I still use it for almost every correction I do still)

The Porter cable is all the power a newbie might need, however once the newbie gets experienced more power will be desired.

That is where I feel the gg6 you can grow into , as the Porter cable you can grow out of.

The power is there if you need it.

Kind of like a sport mode in a sports car, the gg6 has economy mode and sports mode.

Either polisher is a great choice, if you have any questions don't be afraid to message or ask.

What are you waiting? Go order.

Because it matters to me, it might matter to someone else:

GG6 - Made in China, although warranted for life
7424XP- Made in Mexico (at least mine was) and are known to be bulletproof

Porter cable has been making tools for a long time and Im surprised they dont update this. They also used to have usa made tools, and I even think they need to have a lifetime warranty

First, thank you, that was very helpful. As a newbie I appreciate it.

Second, the attachments both go to dead links for me.

Third, I know I can (and will) look it up, but putting the prices in would have been helpful.

And finally, how do these relate to $40 polishers you can pick up at the local auto or hardware store?

    Thanks again.

Fred it's easy to look up the prices--they are both in the $125 range, but are often included in sales and specials.

These are real polishers ie can correct defects in paint--the $40 units you can pick up at Walmart and other places are nothing more than wax spreaders--they do not have enough power to correct defects in paint ie Polish paint.

But, when a PC requires repair outside of the warranty period it's going to cost you a minimum of $80

The local store polisher, keep in mind while that 40 dollars may sound like it's saving you a ton of money.

    Think about this !

You still need a backing plate
    Multiple pads
    Compound
    Finishing polish
    Pad cleaner
    Conditioning brush
    Microfiber towels

It's better off getting the starter kit that autogeek has.

Rather the gg6 or Porter cable they offer nice kits, even with Mike phillips book , and for 200$ your ready to rock and roll.

So it seems like your saving money.

But unless you have all that stuff your really not.

So if you have 300$ in it you still have a low end polisher.

Or spend 200$ and you have a name brand proven polisher.

yes, the original PC7424 (i have the meguiar's G100 re-badged PC7424) is bulletproof and i still have mine. as far as the PCXP, i've heard more problems (particularly the shaft breaking off) with the PCXP than the GG6. taking in consideration it's probably a small percentage but that can be said for any problems with the GG6 or other DA as well. that's where the warranty comes in and any given man made tool can go bad at anytime...
    i am the jump starter.

my PCxp just started knocking internally. closest service center (which happens to be also dewalt, black and decker, Stanley and other companies service center) is 2 hours away. it was 1 day over the invoice date, and they told me I'd have to mail the polisher in to see what they could do. I spent 10 bucks to ship the polisher for a "maybe" we will fix it for you.

meanwhile, my other polisher is a griot was a breeze to warranty. just answered question whether it was 10ft or 20ft cable and they sent me another one

That is the wrong attitude for anybody to have.

    China, USA, Germany, Italy, Mexico.

I don't care where the machine was made.

I care about the performance, the reputation of the company, and the the experiences I had or others have had with the polisher.

Any machine can and will break at some point period no questions asked.

And it is nice to know that whatever goes wrong I will have a new machine coming my way or have it fixed for free.

Others have posted before me saying that they had to spend 10dollars just to see if it can be fixed .

With griots everything is 100% guaranteed . and have a great reputation for customer service .

All these machines are good .

HOWEVER the one where a thread is posted almost every week about it breaking is the m110 from megs.

I had a backplate malfunction and a pad problem with griots.

One email and 2 days later I had a replacement at my doorstep at the shop.

Not that porter cable isn't a great company or a tool, I've had a PC for 4 years now with no issues.

However its nice to know if the machine breaks dies, stops, that I will have it fixed or replaced with no doubts
