New test for WG Si02 Paint Sealant

About 2.5 years ago we retiled our bathroom shower. At that time I sealed the tile and grout with WG Deep Gloss Paint Sealant.

I'm guessing the WGDGPS lasted about a year to 1.5 years. We did very little to help maintain the condition (such as wiping down the walls and floor after each shower) and it's gotten kid of ugly in the last six months.

In addition the shower door and window were significantly coated with soap grime (grime on the windows is evident on the picture of the glass with the towel in the background).

This was a good opportunity to test out the usefulness of WG Si02 Paint Sealant on the tiles, grout and fixtures. I decided that I would also use a couple of trusty products (no longer sold on AG) that I use for the windows of my vehicles.

Obviously for the cleanup of the tiles I had to use commercial tile products not found on AG.

Step one was to clean the tiles and gout and the GooGone product was very effective using my portable drill and the scrubber attachments (for the corners I had a special brush). It took a while as the mess was very established but after an hour or so all was cleaned up, rinsed and wiped off.

Next step was to clean up the windows. I started with the 3" blue soft foam pad on my Griot's DA which was effective on the upper portions of the windows and the outside.

However the grime on the lower windows required the orange pad and a number of passes to fully remove the scum. I know after I polish my cars that I have to use the WG Paint Prep prior to applying the sealant to make sure all the oils are off the paint.

Is that step required on the tiles? I'll never know the answer and the Goo-Gone certainly doesn't have an oily feel to it. However to be safe, I used it anyway prior to applying the sealant.

Finally with all the prep work complete, I hand applied the WG Si02 Sealant to the tiles/grout and fixtures...and let it cure for the requisite 20 minutes before wiping off. (The grout can mess up a pad on a DA and hand applying is much preferred). I also added the window treatment to the windows for protection and longevity.

This is a photo of the completion of the project and was taken from outside the shower and through the crystal clear glass. I'm very happy with the results.

All I'm looking for is protection from soap and wash buildup...none of the glossy/glassy/deep wet look that I look for on my cars. Hopefully I'll get another year to 1.5 years of protection...and maybe I learned my lesson to apply another coat before so much grime and soap builds up.

    Wow!

Thanks for sharing a blow-by-blow detailed write-up about detailing the shower.

We did this at our last place but used a ceramic coating and it appeared to have worked great because we just never saw any need to do a major clean again.

Find something you like and use it
