Review: Cobra 3-Pack The Supreme Guzzler Waffle Weave Towels 20 x 40 inches

Cobra Guzzler Waffle Weave Drying Towels

If you've watched this video or read the article,

How, why & when to inspect your microfiber towels when detailing cars

You know I'm a huge fan of inspecting my microfiber towels to make sure they have not somehow become contaminated so you risk scratching your car's paint anytime you're wiping any of your car's body panels.

Another thing I'm a huge fan of is FLAT WEAVE microfiber towels because there's really no place for contaminants to lodge. And this is just ONE Of the things I like about the Cobra Guzzler Waffle Weave drying towels. They are safe out of the package and safe over time. PLUS they absorb water like crazy and you can easily wring them out and continue to use them as you work around your car.

This is called a flat weave.

    Here's a close-up....

    Drying after a Rinseless Wash

Besides drying your car after a normal wash job - these Guzzler Waffle Weave towels work great for drying your car's exterior when doing a rineseless wash. In fact, I can easily dry a car, truck or sports utility vehicle using a 3-pack of the 20" x 40" towels and one of the 16" x 24" towels for all the jambs.

    Let me show you....

My test car - 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

This is my neighbors SUV. It's normally parked under a carport but it's been 2-3 months since it's been washed. In that time it has become covered in dirt from wind-blown dust and pollution and also when the landscapers use the Leaf Blower to clean the parking lot after mowing the lawn.

First I mix up a batch of rinesless wash...

Next place about a dozen microfiber towels into the rinesless wash solution

I recommend using about a dozen towels, one towel for each panel. This helps you to avoid cross-contamination of the dirt on one panel onto the next panel. This is how you wash a car using a rinseless wash while avoiding scratching the paint.

Periodically - press the towels down into the solution

I counted 10 towels but you get the idea - use LOTS of towels when doing a rinseless wash.

On the roll-around cart next to the wash cart, I have one 16" x 24" Guzzler and three 20" x 40" Guzzlers.

I'll start with the large Guzzlers for the body panels and after the exterior is washed and dry, then I'll wash and dry all the jambs. For the jambs I like the smaller 16" by 24" Guzzler as the jambs are basically THIN panels and a smaller towel is easier to manage for these areas.

Like a normal car wash, start at the top and work you way down and around the vehicle.

First I use the rinseless wash towel to wet and then wipe a section of the roof.

Then follow the rinseless wash by wiping this section dry using the Guzzler Waffle Weave drying towel.

Continue this process to the rest of the roof...

    Safety Tip for Tall Vehicles

If you own a truck, van or sports utility vehicle - you're going to need a safe way to reach the top. While a Step Stool can work, what works better is to invest in a Werner Work Platform. These can be found at most of your larger hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowe's.

    Technique Tip

Here's something I like to do before I start and that is to tape a couple of universal detailing towels to the front side, ends of the Werner Work Platform.

This will enable to you place the platform close to the vehicle without the risk of accidentally scratching or gouging the paint.

So when you see me working on a tall vehicle - it's not because I'm able to stretch myself - it's because I'm standing on a work platform.

With a work platform you can work safely and in most cases reach the length of most roofs with just one platform.

The microfiber towel is a barrier between the platform and your car's paint.

For longer vehicles - use two platforms

With 2 platforms you won't have to get up and down over and over again as you work down the roof. Save your knees or your knee.

And never use a work platform with collapsible legs, (for easy storage), without first locking the safety clips into place.

Knock out the rest of the vehicle...

After washing and drying the roof, you can put the work platforms away and proceed to wash and dry the rest of the car.

With a quality rinseless wash and some quality microfiber towels you can wash and dry your car without running water and do it safely and in less time than it would take using the normal method of using a water hose and wash bucket.

    Technique Tip

Here's another tip that will help you to keep our towels from getting contaminated during use. Have a CLEAN bucket handy and as you work your way around the car, place your dirty towels in the clean bucket. This keeps them off the floor where there's dirt, dead bugs, sticks, rocks and leaves. All of these thing will contaminate and ruin your fluffy microfiber towels.

Continue placing your used towels into the Clean Dirty Towel Bucket - as I like to call it as you work around your car.

    All Done!

With 10 of the Cobra Super Plush Jr. Microfiber towels and 4 of the Guzzlers - I was able to wash and dry this full size SUV in about 30 minutes.

Later I'll share my technique tip for washing your microfiber towels....

Here's the results - first, all the jambs for the doors, hood and hatchback....

And here's the exterior of the RAV4

Check out the shine and gloss in the paint - not bad for a rinseless wash?

    She's so sexy!

    Review

I'm a huge fan of flat weave towels of any type or use. The flatter the weave - the less fluffy fibers the better. These Guzzler Waffle Weave Towels are about as flat of a weave as you can get but still over a waffle-weave shape or grid-like shape to give the towel girth, body and substance. They absorb water as well as any similar towel and can be washed, dried and re-used hundreds of times if not thousands of times.

I can dry just about any full size car with 3 of the 20" by 40" and they come in a 3-pack - so pretty easy to figure out what to buy. If you're doing a Prep Wash, they're great. If you're drying off a car you've already performed all the paint correction and sealing - they're still great. Heck - you can even use the blotting technique with these towels if you really want to be super careful.

There are lots of other more complicated designs when it comes to a drying towel or a drying chamois. Me? I like to keep it simple and practical and that best sums up the Cobra Guzzler Waffle Weave Towels. They are a great bang for you buck and won't ever let you down.

    BEFORE

The day I drove the Toyota RAV4 to Autogeek, she was pretty dirty. It had just rained and I took these pictures.

    Note: Zero water beading.

I'm pretty sure that's MOLD growing on the paint on the roof...

    AFTER

The next day, after washing the RAV4 it rained overnight and I took these pictures. Not only does the paint and car itself look super clean, but now she's beading water like I just waxed her!

The next day it rained again, took this in the morning - there's a HUGE difference in surface tension after the rinseless wash.

After detailing a car, if possible, the best thing to do, ESPECIALLY with any wet towels - is to wash ASAP

    Then dry...

The Clean Dirty Towel Bucket Method

By using a bucket to hold dirty towels as you work around a car - the towels NEVER touch the floor and can go right from the bucket to the washing machine. It's all about doing the thing you can do to prevent your microfiber tools from becoming contaminated.

    Inspect and Store

After washing and drying, inspect your towels, fold and store in place they will stay clean. Be sure the place you're going to inspect and fold your towels is CLEAN.

Remember, when it comes to car detailing,

The little things are the big things -Mike Phillips

And yes, you can quote me on that.

Even though the Guzzler drying towels area a FLAT WEAVE towel, it's important to inspect any towel that touches paint.

After folding, store someplace they will stay clean.

    And the process continues...

Also - as discussed in my video here - when inspecting your microfiber towels, especially any FLUFFY microfiber towel - if you cannot pick-out any sharp or pokey particles you feel with you hand then cut them out.

If you can't cut them out - turn the towel into something detailing related that is NOT paint related. Like wiping down the engine compartment.

    It looks AMAZING!

I must say I think it makes the whole vehicle pop off when the door jambs are clean.

I love The Guzzler! I get pretty exited each time I get to use it and also the first time I used The Guzzler I knew that I would never use another. I can usually dry a whole car with one Supreme Guzzler, but I am purchasing more for sure in the near future!

I agree. Came out really nice for just a rinseless wash. This is a 2019,so it's NEW but since it was purchased I don't think the owners, (my neighbors), had done anything to the paint outside of normal washing. So since leaving the dealership it has not seen a coat of wax or anything like a coat of wax.

    Agree.

Some detailers like to clean the jambs during the washing step. I find this takes too long, it's a tick on the overkill side and you tend to get water inside the car.

Here's what I do - after wiping all the rinseless wash off of a car or in the case of a normal wash, after drying all the water off the car, at some point I have a Guzzler that is wet, as in saturated wet. I wring the water out and use this to wipe down all the jambs.

In this write-up, I did the extra step of first wiping the jambs down with the rinseless wash. Either way, using a dedicated cleaning wipe with "something" or simply wiping the jambs clean with a wet guzzler, will get the jambs clean.

Good towel. I tend to to not like the Supreme - just too big for me. I do like the 20" b 40" and the smaller 16" by 24". In a perfect world, the people that make the Guzzler would make one that is SQUARE, say 20" by 20".

Call it the Mike Phillips Guzzler.

I simply do NOT like rectangular towels. When folded they don't fit my hand or fit anything. That's just me though. This applies to our waffle weave glass cleaning towels too. For some reason they are rectangular? What the heck? Make them SQUARE. Same for one of the black wheel and tire towels we sell. Again - rectangular? What the heck? Make it square. It would be easier to like these towels if they were square and that equates to being easier to share and thus sell.

I like the Idea of using this technique, especially since you took the extra step of a rinse less wash before. These jambs around here can get pretty dirty so I typically automatically default to a waterless wash. I like the extra step of wiping them again with a wet guzzler after the wash.

    1. What if you use the Hybrid Solutions Ceramic 3 in 1 Detailer for your jambs? Is there a need for a follow up wipe with The Guzzler?

Mike, did you mean the Ultimate Guzzler? I believe the Supreme is 20 X 40 the Ultimate is 28 X 44. Here's a pic of me holding the one that I have

This really got me to thinking, this may be something I'd really like to try and compare. If it was 20" x 20" when you folded it into fourths I believe that would mean it would then be 10" x 10". This is a little bigger, I believe by about 6 inches than your standard microfiber towel such as the Cobra Carbon Black Edgeless Microfiber polishing cloth. When folded into fourths you would gain about 3 inches in my opinion.

I think the optimal size and shape of the towel depends on the techniques you use when drying, and your personal preference.

For example on the horizontal panels I like to lay the towel flat across the panel, grab two corners and gently pull the towel to dry as much of the panel as I can at one time. I believe the current rectangular design works great for this. If there's a section I can't reach with this technique I fold the towel into 4 reach across and dry the section I need (On the horizontal panels) . For this reason I am purchasing the Ultimate Guzzler for use on horizontal panels, and I think it will work great on some of these large SUV's I detail as well.

I don't think the Ultimate will be effective on smaller vehicles so I will switch to the Supreme for them.

I like the Idea of a 30" x 30" for larger vertical panels, as I like to use various techniques to dry as much of the panel at one time as possible. I feel like a little more towel would help to dry the vehicle faster.

I think you need to contact the folks at Cobra and get them to come out with a, "Mike Phillips Guzzler by Cobra Tripple Kit"

    This would include:

    1 X 20"x 20" Mike Phillips Guzzler

    1 X 30"x 30" Mike Phillips Guzzler

    1 X 20"x 40" Supreme Guzzler

I would definetely buy something like that!!!

The big picture is to find a way to do a good job without doing too many steps.

I wiped my wife's car's door, hatchback and roof jambs down the same way explained in this article as well as my car's jambs - both after first doing a rinseless wash to both cars. (testing new product)

Don't know about that? I normally fold the 20" by 40" in half for a 20" b 20" and of course if flops all around as I push it over car body panels but it works and I work fast.

    Thank you for the information!

I've been wondering about quality door jamb towels for some time now. I think I'll get 12 for use as a door jamb cleaning kit.

I hear you on not making too many steps.

Basically what I'm understanding is to wipe them out twice?

Option #1 would be a waterless wash followed up with the HS Ceramic 3-in-1.

Option #2 would be a rinseless wash followed up wiping out the jambs with a wet guzzler.

Here in Oklahoma we have red dirt that gets caked on to the bottom of the jambs so sometimes there's no choice but to spray them. I usually blast the really bad ones with the Tornador Black.

I do apologize I know we got side tracked on this thread, talking about door jambs and all.

I legit appreciate the advice though!

I agree the 20" b 40" does flop around and I have to be careful not to let it touch the ground as I dry the lower portions.

I should document exactly how I dry cars with it. I think in order to mitigate this I use both hands to controll the towel? I don't remember, I just do it some how. I'm in to big of a hurry to remember.

I'm sorry to hear, "Cobra don't care about Mike Phillips."

    HA HA HA HA

You use so many of their products, I figured they'd at least give you a little bit of recognition!
