Re: Review: 3D Ceramic Coating on a Marine Gelcoat Boat

    Hey Mike,

I am curious to see what your recommended boat wash is?

How far down did you guys polish that boat?

Based on my research there is a clay step required, but what about iron decon?

Also, say I compounded a boat with 3D one and the Rupes wool pad.

What would be the appropriate follow up step, the Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy Cut Cleaner Wax, or the Marine 31 All in One Gel Coat Polish and Wax?

I'm assuming the Marine 31 All in One Gel Coat Polish and Wax, because the heavier compounding step would already be completed. I guess I just want to make sure that the All in One Gel Coat Polish and Wax will remove the holograms caused by the rotary.

Hopefully the blue Lake Country HDO Blue Foam Heavy Cutting Pad will work good with the cleaner wax. As long as I clean them good they'll be good to go for polishing paint again right?

Will 64 OZ of each product be enough for an 18 foot bass boat? Could I safely get away with 32 OZ?

    Great detail Mike!

What's your guess as to total hours?

Fantastic write up. May have to try the 3D ceramic in the spring when my comes out of storage . It takes me a good 3 days to prep “Ruby” for summer fun ( 24 foot Cobalt).Compound, polish ,(using wool followed by foam pads) then coating (and my shoulders feel it); and clean n coat interior seating.

DANG. Great stuff. Lots of info there!

I am pretty sure, after this thread, I WON'T be detailing boats anytime soon! No thank you.

The EZ-Switch system looks awesome. It's like a combination of 3M's system PLUS a garden hose quick-connect system.

Oh, and I had been considering them Rupes wool pads. Have a yellow one to try out this weekend, but just might have to try the Blue Rupes Wool as well.

    Thanks Mike!

Can you explain the reason for swirl removal? I'm assuming that you aren't removing swirls just for cosmetic reasons because no one will see swirls in water but in order to smooth the paint to make it seal more effectively.

Yes, I can explain the reason for swirl removal. In fact, I think I'll write an article to explain the answer.

    Here's the short version,

1: The quality of the custom build for this boat is over the top. I watched the segment on TV and Royce did a great job showcasing all the custom features he built into the boat. This said - one reason to remove the swirls is so the boat finish looks as good as the boat build quality.

2: A smooth flat surface will last longer and resist oxidation and corrosion better and longer than a rough, textured or scratched surface.

After typing the above, I dawned on me I do have an article on this topic, it's actually the only article like it on this topic. It's deep.
