Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
I purchased this during one of the christmas sales and used it today on my 2002 Camaro SS. I don't drive this car to often but I shall see what kind of durability I get with it.
Product description:
Quote:
CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating is the ultimate protection against the non-stop abuse that the leather and vinyl upholstery in a daily driver is exposed to. CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating forms a semi-permanent protective barrier on leather and vinyl surfaces that resists staining caused by mud, grease, crayons, juice, super glue and more! CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating is perfect for light colored leather because it protects against dye transfer from clothing.
CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating is the most durable leather protectant available. Unlike a conditioner that penetrates into the surface, Cquartz Leather forms a flexible shell of protection on top of the surface that prevents the leather’s natural oils from escaping in the first place, ensuring the leather retains its soft, tactile feel.
CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating will not cause leather to “yellow” or fade. This durable coating creates a hydrophobic and UV resistant barrier of protection that keeps your leather looking and feeling like the day it was new.
Interiors that are coated with CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating will be easier to maintain! Because the coating prevents dirt and grime from sticking to the leather, a damp microfiber towel is all it takes maintain the finish.
Protect your vehicle’s delicate leather and vinyl upholstery with CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating!

Prior to the coating application, I cleaned the leather seats with Meguiar's D181 and a brush. I followed up with a damp microfiber per the directions.
Before shot of the lower bolster cleaned up using D181 and wiped down with a damp microfiber.

After shot of the lower bolster shot with Cquartz leather coating. It has a slight darkening effect. It was a bit difficult to capture the slight darkening with the camera. I didn't take too many photos.

I referenced this video for the coating application
Cquartz Leather coat 2014 - YouTube
Thoughts:
Cquartz leather coating has a slight darkening effect. It leaves a matte finish on the leather surface once it dries.
When applying it almost feels and looks like there is no product being applied to the leather surface due to the darkening effect not being too noticeable. I even thought I was not applying enough to the applicator. It also appears as if it is streaking. But that goes away once it is buffed off to remove any remaining high spots. It had a little bit of a learning curve but after one seat I was able to figure out how to use it.
The leather had a nice feeling once it dried after about 10-15 min.
It will be hard to judge the durability of it on this car since I don't drive it daily . But the upside is all I need to do is use a damp applicator to maintain the surface.
A little product when a long way. I used 4 applicators. One for each seat (2 front + 2 rear). I will be using this on my daily driver as well the next time I detail the interior.
Overall a great product that leaves the surface looking and feeling great.

Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
Great review. It will be interesting to see how long the coating lasts on your daily driver once you apply it.

Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
I picked up a bottle this week. I am applying it to my daily driver sometime in the next couple of weeks. My plan was to clean it with my Blue Magic leather cleaner prior to the application. If I remember correctly, there was no film left behind from that but I will probably wipe it down with a damp MF anyway.
I even contacted Car Pro about this product because I was wondering if it would work on my Air Jordan collection. I was confused since it said, "Avoid use on white/light colored interiors." Then it said that it prevents leather from yellowing, which would have to be right. Anyway, they suggested I test a small area and let it cure for 2 weeks before making the call whether to apply to the entire shoe or not. I am going to do that to a white pair that I have and also a black pair. I figure if it works for finished leather seats, why not for shoes as well?

Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
I have used this on two different occasions. Was not impressed. I used it on white leather, since AG suggested it prevents dye transfer. Did the entire interior first coat. Things were fine, did a second coat as instructed, the very LAST section I applied the second coat to yellowed. Brand new Lincoln, big yellow spot. Of course I posted and got don't use on light interiors and the famous do a test spot. Well I did, and I coated the entire interior with no issue. It wasn't until the last 5 minutes of coating did I have a problem.
Second vehicle was my new Durango black interior, application was fine, I have 3 dogs I take to run so mud is always an issue. Dirt is as difficult to remove as it was before coating.

Interesting. I think leather coatings are useless. Why? If driven daily, the abrasion is going to remove the coating relatively quickly, IMO.

I agree, I thought I'd give it a try, not worth the cash

Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
It's been about a month since I applied it. I drove my camaro the other day. I noticed no yellowing or discolorations. No high spots either. The leather has a nice feel to it.
I only applied one coat.

Keep us posted on how it works out for your shoes. Should work on them.

I only used 1 coat. The leather on my car is of course black and I noticed no discoloration or yellowing.
I don't recall a second layer being recommended unless Cory actually recommeded it. I followed the directions from the CarPro's site and on the box. They say it "may" be layered. I took that as optional.
I have also spoke to KMG detailing about this product and I believe he has not noticed any issues using this product on customers vehicles.
Directions:
- Thoroughly clean all dirt, moisture, and oils from surface with non-oily, interior safe cleaner that leaves no sealant or dressing
- Wipe with a water damp towel to remove residue from your cleaner if needed
- Pour at least 10 drops or one small strip onto the suede wrapped applicator
- Work CQuartz Leather into the surface including all creases, and texture
- Gently wipe off any excess within 2-3 minutes (may vary with temps and leather type)
- May layer after 30 minutes from start of the first application
- Touch dry after 10 min / Avoid water for 4 hours / Fully cured at 3 days

You are probably right. But the coating will probably break down slower compared to a leather conditioner/protectant.

Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
A quick follow up. I have driven my Camaro quite a few times since I have applied Cquartz leather coating to it. It has been holding up just fine. I can still feel the little slickness the product left behind.
I ended up cleaning the interior today and wiped the seats down with Meguiar's Quik Interior Detailer. To answer the question about the cleaner in QID, no it did not remove the coating. It worked just fine. The seats cleaned up easily. I noticed no dirt coming off the seats. Especially from the drivers seat which is the only one that gets sat in the most.
Here is the beading from a spritz of QID. I tried my best to capture it.

I applied it to my uncles leather seats in his 2002 Corvette. The seats came out great. Should make future cleanings much easier.

I even put some on my shoes just for the heck of it lol. It seems to be holding up fine.

Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
What makes this product good to use on interior wood/plastic surfaces? Wouldn't CarPro Dlux be a better choice or is Dlux for exterior surfaces only?
-
Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
Collinite 855 works great as well.

That would be a question for the CarPro guys to answer. Perhaps this is more forgiving for internal plastics compared to DLUX in terms of ease of use. In reality one could probably use any coating on those pieces.

Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
Here are a couple more applications.
Applied it to the leather seat on my brothers harley.
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler.../IMG_7106a.jpg
Also applied it to the interior of my dad's 2015 Impala. The seats are grey. Tested this a few months back on an inconspicuous spot to see if it would cause any issues. It did not, so I finally had time to apply to the leather seats. Applied 2 coats to the rear seats and 3 coats on the front seats.
Lost daylight while I was finishing up. Took the Scangrip iView headlamp out and lit up the area.
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler.../IMG_7378a.jpg
1 1/2 days later I tested out the hydrophobic properties of the coating on the seats.
Water out of an eye dropper.

Water sprayed out of a spray bottle

Video coming up shortly once I finish uploading it.

I also forgot to include this photo of me applying it to the wood grain plastics on my dad's 2015 Impala.

Great question. Hopefully Avi or someone from CarPro can chime in on that because I could not find any information on that.
My most recent application it started dropping into the 50's as I was finishing up the last seat and it was still working ok.
I just saw that CarPro made a slight update to the precautions on their home page. The two boxes I had came with orange sued applicator. So something must have changed. I just ordered a new one so I will see if it comes with orange or white suede applicators. Very interesting.
Quote:
Precautions:
Professional Product - Not for do it yourself use
Do NOT use the orange suede applicators. Use only white cotton applicators or white suedes.
Avoid use on white/light colored interiors
Confirm any leather is standard finished leather only and if unsure perform 2 week visual test on inconspicuous surface
Note: Currently there are a variety of leather and vinyl materials with a variety of coatings used by many auto manufacturers. It is not possible to acquire or test this number of surfaces therefore user must confirm viability in inconspicuous area on any surface.

Quick follow up why the change. Posted over on the CarPro Forum and this was the response.

Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
Nice review, Guz.
I noticed you had used Meguiar's quick detailer. Did you at any point use cleaners that laid down any protectants (basically AIO or 3 in 1s) or did you clean your seats periodically with a straight up interior cleaner?
-
Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
For a 2002 that leather has held up quite well. They surely dont make them like they used to these days. Once my leather needs a cleaning I have a sample of wolfgangs conditioner to try out. I have been using meguiars all purpose diluted at the lowest level and conditioning with leather masters.
What is the difference between apc and the meguiars leather cleaner?
I would be a little afraid to use that adams brush with the lexus interior it seems like the coating chips off so easily. They definitely dont make them like they used to anymore. Not to mention the prior owner sitting on the thick bolsters rather than the middle of the seat (I hate when people do that).

I am sure I did. I can't recall which one's I used. Going from memory I would say probably Meguiar's D180 Leather Cleaner & Conditioner for sure. But I gave them a deep clean every so often with an interior cleaner. I ended up switching to Meguiar's D181 Leather Cleaner for leather.
With the seats coated all I use is Meguiar's QID.
On my dad's I used McKee's All In One Leather Lotion prior to giving them a deep clean with D181 and coating them.
I deep cleaned them at least once a year if I used some sort of leather conditioning product whether it's a stand alone or AIO.

The leather has held up good. It helps that I don't daily drive it. The leather in my 99 Pontiac Grand Prix looks just as good other than one wear spot .
The difference between those two is that for me the leather cleaner leaves a less tacky feeling than APC after cleaning.

I noticed the tacky feeling with higher apc dilutions but i try to use it at the lowest setting if anything you can always go back with quick interior.

Is the applicator reusable? I plan to do my truck center console top and then my car seats. Not sure if I will do in the same day thanks

I tend to just use the applicators and toss them. You can see what happens to the applicator in the second video on page 2 at the 3:30 mark. It won't get really stiff because of the product within in the applicator and maybe that is a good thing as it means it is flexible. But the product will definitely harden on the suede applicator compared to an applicator that has nothing on it. It comes with 5 suede applicators so you should have enough.

Just to clarify, the 3 day cure time means that you shouldn't sit on the seats for 3 days, correct?

Fully cured meaning it has bonded and hardened onto the surface. See the side of the box. Dry to the touch in 10 mins. Can get wet after 4 hours. You can sit in the seat if you wish to. I would at least let it sit overnight before one sits in the seat just as a precaution.
I'm going off memory but I believe my dad sat in the seats a day or two after and nothing happened to the coating.

Yay for me. It's still on the Impala seats. They feeling is different compared to seat that has nothing on it. I will post photos the next time I wipe it down to show the hydrophobic properties. I wipe down weekly with Meguiar's QID. It's been on my Camaro for over a year. I drive it at least once or twice a week right now.

Update time thanks to Eldorado.
3 months on my dad's daily driven 2015 Impala. Beading still looks great. Seats have been cleaned with Meguiar's Quik Interior Detailer. This is on the drivers side seat which sees more activity. This seat has multiple coats.

15 month update on my 2002 Camaro. This car is driven 1-2 times a week. This is on the drivers side seat. This seat has only one coat.

Thanks. Impressed with the coating every time I use it. A damp towel is all that is really needed to clean the seats. Also noticed the seats stay cleaner as there was not a lot of dirt on the damp microfiber towel.

1 year update on my dad's seats. Cquartz Leather Coating has held up well after 1 year. The surface is still hydrophobic and the surface tension is still present indicating it is still on the surface. The car is daily driven. So far so good.

Re: Review - CarPro Cquartz Leather Coating
Final update with Cquartz Leather Coating. It is still on my Camaro seats that I coated 2 years ago. I rarely drive it so that is why the coating is still intact.
On my dad's daily driver the coating came close to 2 years. I recoated them at 23 months as the coating had shown signs of wear as well as the seats holding onto dirt more. A quick cleaning and a recoat and the seats are good to go.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ab57672bc4.jpg
The only area that I felt the coating was weak was on the interior trim pieces. The surfaces still marred with wipedowns and just normal use over the course of the coatings life span. The reason for that is the Cquartz Leather doesn't form a hard shell like Cquartz, Cquartz UK or DLUX. It is rather softer and more flexible.
TIP: Unlike Gyeon Leather Shield where Gyeon Leather Coat can be used as a maintenance protectant, CarPro PERL is not a good choice to mimic the same idea. Perl on leather looks good but it did tend to attract more dirt on the test area I did.
