Haven't found a easy way yet hopefully someone can help
It sounds like you need a Werner aluminum work platform. It is available from Lowes and Homedepot. You can usually pick one up for half price during one of their major sales if you can wait.
If you do not prefer buying new equipment, another thing you can do is open the door and step on the side of the car as a foot hold to reach the roof. Just a little extra work after to clean the part you stepped on which should be easy since its usually plastic.
Montana boars hair brush combined with a broom handle with a thread
Short answer is there isn't an easy way to do it. Roof racks, moldings etc make it difficuly. A work platform really helps vs a ladder but what ever gets you up high enough to clean polish and wax that's what you have to do.
Montana boars hair brush with a nice telescope handle and a Warner platform :) that's how I wash the top of my truck for the two years
Work platform or a step stool
I looked at the Werner and Gorilla platforms. Decided that they weren't long enough to keep me from having to move the platform in order to reach the entire roof. Since I would have to move it anyway, I decided to go light weight.

This is also from Gorilla. Rated to 300 pounds. Moves easily. $10.97 at Home Depot.

Someones bound to invent some telescoping wax applicator for those of us that are vertically challenged.
On smaller SUVs I stand on the rear tire and use the roof rack as a grab handle. Larger ones I open the front doors and stand on the door sills. With full sized vans you need a three or four step ladder.
Do you guys typically compound and polish the roofs on SUVS or only if the customer wants it (do you charge more?).
I always polish the roof. I just have a simple step stool though. A long bench might be a better alternative however.
What's the exact problem here?
You just can't reach it?
Then you'll need a step ladder, you already knew that didn't you?
some question here.......
I also want to buy one of those Werner work Platforms. Waiting til they go on sale is a great idea, but might have to wait a while. I have not seem them at Lowe's and I have asked even online, but just get a deer in headlights look at times. Don't uderstand why they don't carry it as they have most of the rest of the Werner line.
Ok, what I have done and it works, but is usually in the way, but I use it just to get the roof done. What I do is disassemble my Gorila ladder, put one on each end of the car and I slide a 2x12 into the steps. I can adjust either lower or higher as needed. I have screwed (2) 1x1's on one end, so that it does not slide.
Just using what I got.
If this is your personal vehicle and you are not going to keep it more than three year. Forget polish and wax, no one see's it. You wash it with a long handle mop like thing.
If you are in business the stand shown earlier is great.
Dear Bill
The Gorilla work platform (search for it at homedepot.com) is the same as the Werner's. I need another one and am waiting for a sale. They're usually US$19-21 on sale.
