Time-Lapse Video: Wetsand, Cut and Buff 1964 Malibu
Time-Lapse Video: Wetsand, Cut and Buff 1964 Malibu
I started the actual sanding around 10:00am this morning and have about 75% of the car done and all the way through to wax. Just have the passenger side vertical panels left to do.
Sanded with 3M Trizact #3000 then #5000 then compounded, polished twice and then machine waxed.

The GoPro is set up to take a picture ever minute. I 'll finish the passenger side this weekend and sometime next week Yancy will have the video on YouTube.
That I know of, this is the first time a complete wetsand, cut and buff all the way through to wax has ever been captured via time-lapse.

Time to shut down the show car garage...

Hopefully I'll have this wrapped up today. Was working on this last Friday and then was interrupted till today.

Finished.
The car just glistens in the studio.
I'll share some picture tomorrow and as soon as the video is created from the time-lapse I'll add it to the first post of this thread.

Burning the midnight oil, I am sure the car looks fantastic though, can't wait to see the pictures and video.
Re: Time-Lapse Video: Wetsand, Cut and Buff 1964 Malibu
This is the last car project I'll be doing here at Autogeek as a single guy as I'm leaving in a few hours and won't be back till Tuesday, March 19th, so this is the last write-up for any projects for a while...
It was cloudy the day Mike Gelter brought his 1964 Chevy Chevelle Malibu Convertible to Autogeek but I did take a few before pictures to show the current condition of the paint.

Under the cloudy sky you can see the orange peel, it actually looks worse under fluorescents and if I can find the "before" pictures I took under the florescent lights in the studio I'll add them to this thread...

IF you look closely you can see dieback in the paint, that's where the paint shrinks back into the prep sanding marks in the primer. These all sanded and buffed out.

Time Lapse Video
Yancy has the Time Lapse Video that shows from the solvent wipe down to the final application of wax and everything in-between. As soon as he has it edited and uploaded I'll add it to the first post of this thread.
Beauty Shots
Until then, here's the beauty shots. I machine sanded twice, compound with wool and rotary once, polished with rotary and foam once, polished with a DA polisher once and then machine applied Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax.

Here's everything I used.

I did the entire project by myself and I think the time-lapse video will show it took me approximately 12 hours. (No roof, A-pillars or B-pillars to sand and buff)
:)

Here's picture 5 from above...

And here's two full size sections cropped out of it showing the sanding prep marks in the paint after the paint dried and shrunk back a little. All of these defects sanded and buffed out.

Re: Time-Lapse Video: Wetsand, Cut and Buff 1964 Malibu
Hopefully Yance can get to the GoPro footage taken from this project sometime in the future as it captured then entire process from start to beginning.
Here's the tape I used for all the raised body lines and there were a lot of them...
3M Blue Vinyl Tape
3M Vinyl Tape 1/4 Inch - 06405
