mat black metal roof rack, very dull, how to bring it back to life
I picked up a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. It had been vandalized in a protest. It had been sprayed on both sides with black paint. I got the spray paint off with Rupes Blue Course compound. Had to use a little wet sanding on some thicker spots. The factory roof rack is mat black, metal. The mat paint is pretty oxidized. I want to get some life back into it. Suggestions. I am thinking a liberal amount of a liquid cleaner wax. Thanks Phil

In this article mike used Sonax PNS on a powder coated trailer.... maybe PNS?

Also look into Matte ceramic coatings. I think Gyeon and Dr. Beasley’s has one.

My guess is any cleaner/wax is going to stain it.
If you go in this direction - test the cleaner/wax in a small area and then watch it for a week or two. IF it work, do the rest of the rack. If it doesn't work - you'll be glad you only did a small area?

The powder coat on the boat trailer is heavily textured. PNS did a great job of making it look better and also protect it.
The small can is like 10 bucks. It would be worth a try.
Also - I would expect whatever you find that works - you'll want and need to re-apply often to maintain the appearance and protection. That's just the nature of this type of beast.

And here's the black powder coat paint.

This trailer is 2 years old and the black powder coat paint is already fading.

Towards the front fender - it's actually turning white.

SONAX PNS

This is actually A SONAX applicator pad too - I keep these in the garage for my classes. They work great for all kinds of things.

And this is the best part - not muss, no fuss no cuss - just wipe it on, work it in and move on....

Can you see it?
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...oating_009.JPG
Now can you see it? It's turned the dull, ugly lifeless black powder coat paint dark black again with a rich sheen.

Untreated
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...oating_011.JPG
Treating by wiping the PNS over the paint and the lettering....

BOOM! LOOK how much better the treated area looks as compared to the untreated area.
