Exhaust Tip Polishing and Restoration
Over the weekend my brother-in-law PJ had a chance to test out Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish as a polish to restore exhaust tips.
BEFORE
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...lishing_01.JPG
The black exhaust build-up on the inside of these exhaust tips was hardened and cemented to the metal finish.
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...lishing_02.JPG
We tried a couple of metal polishes and nothing was working fast enough or effective enough.

PJ asked me if I had anything else?
I thought? Yeah - I have some Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish that we use for our car detailing classes.
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...lishing_06.JPG
So I handed him the plastic tub of Mothers polish and he gave it a try.

Instead of working by hand, PJ used the RUPES Nano in Long Neck version with a RUPES 1.5" Coarse Wool Pad.

And BOOM!

The Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish easily removed the hardened black exhaust build-up and restored a beautiful, bright and shiny appearance.

So much better!

Review
I've been using this product for decades. It's a consistent and time-proven performer when it comes to polishing and restoring dull, oxidized aluminum. When PJ asked me if I had something different he could try I had just put the Mothers mag polish away. It was in the garage and I had walked it outside the garage to my product inventory area for are car detailing classes. So it was FRESH in my mind. I kind of thought, well if these other products were not working, I doubt the Mothers product would work and it was probably just a case of too tough of a job.
But I figured, what the heck, so I retrieved it, handed it to PJ and in a few minutes he told me,
Yeah... that's working!
Once again, a tried and true product proves itself again. This product should be a staple in every car guy's garage and also the inventory of every pro detailer. It flat out works.

Just want to add...
When working on exhaust tips - your pads are going to get abused big time...
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...lishing_11.JPG
I'm going to wash this pad in the washing machine, I'll pre-treat it first. Then I'll share how it looks after coming out of the clothes dryer.
If it looks like toast, as in looks ruined - I'll save it for more like like you see in this review.
:)

Mike:
Were those tips chrome?
I thought the Mother's Mag/aluminum polish differed from the chrome polish?
I've never used any Mother's, just Collinite #850.

I have the Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish and the Mothers Chrome Polish.
I used the chrome polish on the bumpers side rails or running boards, and the exhaust tip of this truck.
I contacted Mother's customer service before I used the product and they expressly told me not to use the Mag and Aluminium Polish on Chrome.
Also if you want to use the mother's polishing ball try not to get it at a speed at more than 300 rpm's when using the Mother's Power Ball and a cordless drill, with the Chrome Polish, is what I was told.
In the future I plan to use the Flex PiXiE and a polishing pad on Chrome rather than the Power Ball, unless I'm working on Chrome wheels.
You let the Mother's Chrome Polish Dry to a haze and then buff off. Its safe for use on all types of automotive chrome.
What I'm doing is creating a Chrome kit, by retiring old but still good polishing pads and Cobra Forrest Green Edgeless Polishing cloths to the kit. I just retired my first FGEPC to the kit yesterday.

I'd guess the tips are stainless, based on the black residue. Chrome wouldn't generate black residue.
And yes, there is a substantial difference between Mag & Aluminum Polish, and Chrome Polish. Soft alloy vs a hard plating means you need a different polishing media.
Re: Review: Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish - Exhaust Tip Polishing - RUPES Nano
Another long time user of the product here. Great stuff.
I don't have a fancy little polisher like what is shown above, so I end up going after the tips with the polish, a rag, and good ole fashion elbow grease. If the tips ware really bad I'll put the polish on some 0000 steel wool or a terry cloth toweland then finish up with a soft rag and the polish.

amazingly easy product to use...i personally have been using it since roughly 1992, when i started driving this was the go to product for dolling up my exhaust pipes...(several 5.0 mustangs and anything with aluminized pipes that were exposed)...we used to do a quick 600+ grit wet sand and polish with it...instant chrome pipes.
