What are you trying to accomplish? Is it your car? Customer car? 4 is a good amount for decent correction/paint enhancement
Check out Mike's review. I believe he mentions it in there on what he does.
Review: BLACKFIRE One-Step Cleaner/Wax by Mike Phillips
When working on neglected paint, you use a one-step cleaner/wax like a compound.
Of course, this means you need to know how to use a compound. :)
Use about 3-4 nickel size drops of product and make 8-10 solid section passes. Stop, wipe-off residue and inspect.
Of course, the type of tool you use and the pad is a huge factor, so is downward pressure and arm speed.
I wish everyone could take one of my classes, I show all this stuff. I show how to detail a car as fast as humanly possible while putting out pro quality results.
Also just to note - I'm NOT a pea sized drop buy. I laugh at the pea sized drop guys, it takes forever to do the paint correction step if you're not using any product.
:)
Just remembered,
In this video, I show exactly how to properly use a compound using a simple Porter Cable Polisher. This technique will apply to pretty much any free spinning orbital polisher. You use an AIO like a compound when working on neglected paint. If you're doing just buzzing over a car that you've already detailed, then you can usually make less section passes.

The exception would be the BEAST and then you could tackle half a hood if you have the muscle.
:)
Also for anyone reading this into the future,
I keep the link to that video in this write-up,
