Here’s she is outside when she arrived...

The PROLINE emblems are missing on this side - we still need to remove the foam and adhesive backing and then machine sand to remove the GHOSTING that will be in the gel-coat.

http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...ROLINE_004.JPG
We will be removing the boat registration numbers and boat tag off both sides. The owner will replace.

With the garage door open and natural sunlight shining into the garage, the below picture accurately shows the level of oxidation.

We'll need to use a heat gun to remove the PRO-LINE emblem on this side and then remove the GHOSTING left in the gel-coat from time and exposure.

To accurately show the oxidation level on the Port side of the boat, I'm using both SCANGRIP lights and the Griot's Swirl Finder Light in the pictures below.

This is the SCANGRIP light.

As you can see, this boat is severe oxidation. This will make a great training boat to teach gel-coat correction and gel-coat ceramic coatings.

BEFORE CONDITION - 21' Sea Hunt Center Console
Here you can see the sides of the hull have severe oxidation and scarring with the boat parked outside at the owner's house in natural light.

After the boat arrived to Autogeek we moved it inside and took these pictures.
First - without a light source, to casual observer, the gel-coat doesn't look to bad.
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler..._Class_026.JPG
Then I shined a SCANGRIP Multimatch light onto the hull and it's BAD!
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler..._Class_027.JPG
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler..._Class_028.JPG
These are not SWIRL - they are straight line sanding scratches from #220 and #320 grit sandpaper!
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler..._Class_029.JPG
Here I've turned the light to the higher setting and angled it a little....
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler..._Class_030.JPG
See them? see the straight line sanding scratches? They are everyone on the side of the hull except around the boat registration lettering where the owner buffed this area before applying the stickers.
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...Class_030c.JPG
And where he buffed there are still straight line sanding scratches and holograms from a wool pad used on a rotary buffer with some brand of compound.

Never had a boat this bad
This will the the 8th year I've taught hands-on boat detailing classes here at Autogeek and documented them. In all these years I've never had a boat with such deep sanding scratches in the hull. I told the owner I didn't know if we could get them all 100% out but we would try. We carry #500 grit Mirka Abralon sanding discs here at Autogeek but man.... that's more aggressive than I want to let a CLASS learn how to use on someone else's boat.
When it comes time to do the Test Spot - we'll start with #1000 grit and work our way out to #4000 grit and see if that does the trick.
Nothing like a challenge.
Short video on my Facebook page showing the before condition and the classroom while it's still clean and orderly.
Mike Phillips - The only boat correction and ceramic...
Before you sign-up for any boat detailing class
Ask yourself,
Where are the pictures showing you the boats, the tools and what you get to do? Real boats. BIG Boats. Boats in HORRIBLE CONDITION
(You can't learn how to detail a boat if there's nothing wrong with the boat - think about it)
:)

Continued....
When I'm teaching classes, I tend to get up pretty early. Have to get fresh donuts and bagels on the way to work, get the lights turned on, air-conditioning going and then do any last-minute set-up. But first things first and that means taking out the Boss before leaving the house.
His name is Mojito

Classroom ready to go!
Here's some pictures showing what a real boat detailing classroom would look like if the class were to actually intend for you to be on your feet working on boats.
I normally don't use or even need chairs in my classes, but in the morning we will go over SAFETY. Things like nitrile gloves, eye protection, dust masks. And at lunch time everyone will be tired from so much hands-on they'll want to sit down to eat their lunch. Otherwise heck with the chairs....
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...08b5d18473.jpg
EVERYONE gets their own tools - we have LOTS of tools!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...42656906fe.jpg
In my boat class you gets LOTS of training on how to use a rotary polisher.

Doing a Boat Detailing Test Spot
Next is the Test Spot. Normally I do the Test Spot before everyone arrives. I make sure the boats can be fixed, i.e. the gel-coat can be restored to my expectation level. But this time I didn't do it. I have confidence in the Mirka Abralon sanding discs, the tools, the Marine 31 Captain's Compound, my choice of wool and foam buffing pads, etc.
So I did the Test Spot LIVE in front of the class. This is as my old friend Mike Pennington use to say to me,
Your chance to be the hero or the zero!
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler..._Class_034.JPG
I bring in BIG boats with lots of room for everyone to get plenty of hands-on time, training and experience with all the different tool, pads and products.

http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler..._Class_035.JPG
8:51am
Class started at 7:30am sharp and the time stamp on the below picture is 8:51am. When I say no-sitting, I mean no sitting. Before 9:00am we've already performed the first Test Spot from start to finish. And along the way I teach the correct technique for each of the steps used in the Test Spot.
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler..._Class_036.JPG
Here are the steps.
- Machine sand #1000
- Machine sand #2000
- Machine sand #3000
- Machine sand #4000
- Compound out sanding marks using rotary buffer, wool pad and compound
- Remove holograms using orbital polisher with foam pad and same compound
- Chemically strip the surface.
- Install the gel-coat ceramic coating.
- Give the area a final buff to smooth out the coating and remove any high spots
Here are the results for the 23' Pro Line

Now it's time to turn the class loose and then walk around both boats and monitor each person while watching their technique and if and when needed, pausing them to correct their technique or make suggestions to help them either work smarter or easier.

Approval can take a few hours as I'm the guy that approves all new accounts and when you join - I might not be sitting behind a computer. So have patience, I check for new accounts a few times each day and in the evening.
Need help?
If you need help creating your account, for any reason, simply call me on my cell phone this coming Thursday or Friday during work hours and I'll create your account while we're on the phone. Otherwise call me next Monday through Thursday. I'll be teaching the 3-day class starting on Friday.
THIS IS the thread to post your feedback or review about the class you just took.
Thank you!
First thank you to everyone that attended the 2020 Marine 31 Boat Detailing Class. The boats were in absolutely HORRIBLE condition and now they look brand spanking new!
Everyone worked hard, learned a lot and the results show it.
As I type this it's Tuesday, February 11th, just after lunch. Management gives me the day off after any of my classes so I was off yesterday. I'm happy to say as of today, I have my voice back.
Clean-up
All I'm getting done today is clean-up. As you all witnessed, the garage is a disaster! With the help of some co-workers, we're getting everything cleaned up and prepping the garage for the upcoming 3-day Car Detailing Boot Camp Class. If you click the link below, you'll see what a Mike Phillips Car Detailing Class looks like.
Training Cars for the February 2020 3-day Car Detailing Bootcamp Class
Anyway, tomorrow is Wednesday, February 12 and I took the day off as it's my birthday and my wife Stacy has something special planned for me. This means I won't be back into the office and ready to do "office work" until Thursday and Friday. As soon as I get back I'll start adding some of the picture Meghan took on Saturday to showcase all your hard work.
So join the forum, post your review or feedback about what you thought of the class and stay tuned as I'm going to add more pictures to this thread.

If I hadn’t known better, I would’ve taken a look at the condition of that gel coat & said there was no chance of recovering that .... & yet here we are - looks incredible. Hats off to everyone who took this class, y’all did a superb job. :props:

He's still limping. Thank you for asking. For those that don't know, Mojito was scared on New Year's Eve when some fireworks went off and he jumped off the couch and hurt his back left leg. Dr. said it was probably a tear or something and they didn't recommend surgery, just don't let him jump up or down off anything and limit his walking. So Stacy and I pretty much carry him everywhere. It's been 6+ weeks and he's doing better but still gambling along on 3 legs most of the time.

Boat detailing is a LOT of work. But it would be great to have you if it ever worked out.
Me? I'm heading back to the garage, more clean-up to do before I can leave for the day.

Damn, I must have missed that about Mojito, Mike.
I hope it's not a cruciate tear. I have been through more than one of those with my dogs. :(
Give him a scratch and a treat for me. Hope he gets better without the surgery.
Re: Pictures: 2020 Boat Detailing Class - SOLD OUT!
This was a class that I would recommend to anyone that details their own boat or details boats professionally.
I should have take this class 10 years ago. I was able to learn so much for Mike’s knowledge. The ability to actually get my hands on the tools and boats increased my amount of knowledge and experience I received.
Do not think twice about this course and sign up now for next year’s course. The boats looked awesome when we were finished.
I have a boat sitting in my driveway that I can not wait to apply my confident skills to!

Are You using something besides water for the sanding lube?
Re: Pictures: 2020 Boat Detailing Class - SOLD OUT!
Hey Mike,
Thanks for putting on another awesome class. I took the 3-day car class in September and it was great, so I wanted to take the boat class to top off my training. I was not disappointed. This class was a great opportunity to learn about the differences in wetsanding/polishing gelcoat vs clear coat or single-stage auto paints. While a lot of the same principles apply, there are some difference in products and techniques that were good to see and do first-hand.
To anyone thinking of taking the class, I'd highly recommend this or the 3-day auto class. You get to put hands on all of the best tools and products in the industry so you leave with a good idea of what you prefer. This can save a lot of money when purchasing tools to startup a business by making sure you're getting exactly what you need. The discounts and credits you get also add up to quite a bit when placing orders after the class, so that helps justify the cost as well. And lastly, you get to meet a lot of cool people with similar interests to make friendships and contacts that hopefully will last a long time. Take the class!
Big thanks to Andre for helping with the class as well. He's a great source of information regarding different products and a good contact within the company to call when getting ready to order something. He's also just an all-around great guy.
Thanks again, Mike and Andre.

Yes. 3-4 drops of soap. In this example it was the Marine 31 boat wash.
- The soap helps to lubricate the surface as your sanding for smoother sanding experience.
- The soap helps to prevent the discs from loading up (they still load up).
- The soap helps the water to stay wetter on the surface longer instead of simply evaporating.
- The soap gives the water the ability to cling better to a vertical surface.
That's off the top of my head...
:)

Wow!
Now that's a great review because in my honest opinion - its' accurate.
I'm really glad you like the class David and just as important, I appreciate your trust to sign-up for, pay and take 2 classes from your truly. As you witnessed first hand in both classes, they are EXTREMELY on-your-feet and hands-on and there's for the most part, very little butt-time in chairs.

Re: Pictures: 2020 Boat Detailing Class - SOLD OUT!
:updated:
Finally getting time to PHOTO-DOCUMENT this class.
Hey, if there's no pictures... it didn't happen. I don't know of any other "real" boat detailing classes in the U.S.A. or anywhere else for that matter. If there are any other boat detailing classes - there's no photo-documentation to prove it or show people what they get to do when they plunk down their hard-earned cash to take this class.
I'm going through the pictures right now but here's a picture from the Meet-n-Greet at the Marriott on Saturday night.
http://www.autogeekonline.net/galler...et_n_Greet.JPG
The Meet-n-Greet is my favorite part of all my classes. We go around the table and I usually ask three questions.
1: Why did you take the class?
2: What was your favorite part of the class or favorite tool/product?
3: What do you have in the garage or on the boat trailer at home?
And it's always interesting. My classes always attract high caliber people from all walks of life. It would be easy to think anyone taking a boat detailing class or even one of my car detailing classes is just some simple detailer - but that's so far from the truth. Everyone has an interesting and diverse background and most are highly educated.
Like I say, the Meet-n-Greet is my favorite part.
Next Meet-n-Greet is this Saturday for my first 3-day class of the year. By the time Saturday night gets here, the class will have detailed 12 cars and used every major brand and type of tool.
3-4 people that just took the boat class will be back for this car detailing class. Here's what they will be training on.

Hi Martin,
Thank you for attending. If you look at the first page of this thread I have started adding pictures from the class.
I like to put the pictures in order so they tell a story, so the pictures I just added are to 100% completely photo-document the BEFORE condition of the boats.
Stay tuned, takes more time to put pictures into a thread on a forum compared to sharing a picture on Facebook.

Re: Pictures: 2020 Boat Detailing Class - SOLD OUT!
No matter how many years of experience in the detailing business you have had, there is always something new to learn. It is the first time that I go to a class of Mike Phillips and I can say that it is the best. Not only is the hands on training which is very intensive, it is the amount of information, because Mike never stops talking.
When you enter the Autogeek's Show Car Garage, you feel impressed with the amount of tools you can use. If there is something you have not tried before, you can be sure that you can test that tool and compare it with the one you are using or if you were curious to try a new tool in the market, you can also do it because he has it.
This class allows each of the participants to have the 101 experience, Mike and Andre are constantly checking your work, if you have any questions you can ask them and you will have an answer. The products that were used in the process are of good quality and help you work easier.
My experience was better than expected, I shared time with other professionals in the business, I returned home with my certificate, great knowledge and new friends.
Thank you Mike and Andre!!!

Re: Pictures: 2020 Boat Detailing Class - SOLD OUT!
I would definitely recommend this class. I personally learned a ton.
We covered every step necessary to renew a neglected oxidized boat and bring it back to life.
The biggest knowledge gaps for me were in machine sanding, DA polishing, and ceramic coatings.
Being able to get hands on with all the tools and materials cemented my knowledge and gave me an outstanding foundation to take back home with me.
Thanks Mike and Andre.

Re: Pictures: 2020 Boat Detailing Class - SOLD OUT!
Wow boats look awesome. Did the class use any cordless polishers. I Have a home up in NE PA on Lake wallenpaupack which is slightly frozen and come May it’s time to compound n polish the boat (25 ft Cobalt bow rider) .have no power where the boat is stored so I currently use a cordless FlexPE 150-18 (rotary, n wool pads)and XFE 150-18 (orbital, rupes blue coarse pads, etc). Does the new cordless flex beast xce 8-125 (I think that’s the #) offer any advantage to the other 2 cordless I have ( I also have the flex cordless pixie). Been using Mike,s Marine 31 detailing boat for references . Unfortunately work gets in the way of taking the hands on class listed here.

Brain Dump
I basically took everything in my brain, and also in my boat detailing book, (which the Autogeek store says is now discontinued), and unloaded it in the class and into your brain. Thus, a brain dump.

And the reason I bring in boats in HORRIBLE condition is because with a boat in horrible condition I can teach you everything and in a responsible and professional manner. It would be SO much easier to bring in brand new shiny, clean boats but then I couldn't teach you anything "professionally".
In this context, the word professionally means to do no harm as well as do the job right. I could show people how to machine sand a brand new boat but that would not be professional. It was remove perfectly good gel-coat for no good reason except for training purposes and to me - that's not professional.

Machine sanding is an art form when done correctly and once you learn the correct techniques - it's easy!
